Default 'Mosaic' texturing issue. 2.6.20-ARCH+nvidia9746 32bit

I have a problem where textures occasionally appear mosaic'ed.
it seems linked to the video memory load: the more textures loaded, the highest chance it has to happen.
e.g in neverball, this is highly sporadic, while in doom3 it is clearly present, as soon as a level is loaded (100% reproduceable), and sometimes even on the main menu.
any attempt to fix this was absolutely unsuccessful.

issue was not present at all under gentoo (where I used 2.6.17 to 2.6.19 kernels, first x86, then x86_64, all wthout issues). now I recently switched to arch linux 32bit, and default kernel is 2.6.20. the laptop is a dell xps m1210, with a go7400.

attached is the generated nvidia bug report and a very expressive screenshot of doom3 (made with in game screenshot key)

I would be extremely grateful for providing analysis and possible solutions to the issue.

As I was beginning to suspect, the problem seems related to kernel 2.6.20 <-> nvidia driver interaction. I got my hand on kernel 2.6.19-suspend2 (to go back to a pre-2.6.20 kernel) for arch via the community repository, and so far it doesn't seem to suffer from the bug. e.g doom3 is absolutely fine with this kernel, and same nvidia driver version.

attached is another bug report, with working kernel, for comarison purposes.

tried 2.6.21-mm today, with same results as 2.6.20.

there's an obvious difference since 2.6.20, not present in 2.6.19:

Code:
Linux agpgart interface v0.101 (c) Dave Jones
nvidia: module license 'NVIDIA' taints kernel.
ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:01:00.0[A] -> GSI 16 (level, low) -> IRQ 16
PCI: Setting latency timer of device 0000:01:00.0 to 64
NVRM: loading NVIDIA UNIX x86 Kernel Module 1.0-9746 Fri Dec 15 09:54:45 PST 2006
**WARNING** I2C adapter driver [NVIDIA i2c adapter 0 at 1:00.0] forgot to specify physical device; fix it!
**WARNING** I2C adapter driver [NVIDIA i2c adapter 1 at 1:00.0] forgot to specify physical device; fix it!
**WARNING** I2C adapter driver [NVIDIA i2c adapter 2 at 1:00.0] forgot to specify physical device; fix it!
behavior (both above warnings and opengl apps bad tex behavior) is 100% reproduceable.
the warnings have been mentioned in another thread here as 'harmless'... still, coincidence is weird.

built custom kernel+nvidia module without i2c support, same graphical bug.

texture issue still present with 1.0.9755+2.6.20-ARCH, and still absent with 1.0.9755+2.6.19-suspend2

not a configuration issue: rsync'ed arch's / to a asus W7J with ~same hardware except a core duo (hence 32bit), and it works fine.
as it works fine on a 64bit (gentoo) kernel+userland+32bit emul-linux libs, fails on a 32bit kernel+userland on 64bit hardware, and works on 32bit kernel+userland+hardware, I can only blame it on running the 64 bit cpu in pure 32bit mode... something in kernel 2.6.20 certainly has changed to trigger this, but this is the only conclusion I reach.

Could you suffer from similar problem as me?
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=88482
[the artifacts won't appear in 2.6.17-11 kernel and 1.0-9755 nvidia driver (kubuntu edgy eft), but they are there with 2.6.20-15 kernel and 1.0-9755 nvidia driver (kubuntu feisty fawn).
the artifacts aren't so bad if you add:
Option "MultisampleCompatibility"
