Angry screens 's resolution llmited to 800x600 with 9xxx drviers

Hello,
I have a GeForce4 Ti 4800 SE ,a DAEWO0 LCD 18 ,LCD monitor (VGA connector only)

since 9XXX display drivers , i can't use a screens 's resolution greater than 800x600
(with 8xxx drivers, i can use 1280x1024)
in the log , i have "Unable to validate any modes; falling back to the default mode"
infortunately drivers 8xxx aren't supported this 2.6.18,x ,2.6.19.x kernels

I use the 9631 nvidia drivers , recent drivers like 9746 are not supporting the GeForce4 Ti 4800 SE.
Thank you for you help , see the attached file nvidia-report-bug for details.

Bests regards.

According to the bug report, the EDID getting returned from your CRT has bogus data:
(--) NVIDIA(0): --- EDID for @@@ (CRT-1) ---
(--) NVIDIA(0): Maximum Image Size : 65535mm x 65535mm
(--) NVIDIA(0): Valid HSync Range : 4294967 kHz - 0 kHz
(--) NVIDIA(0): Valid VRefresh Range : -1 Hz - 0 Hz
(--) NVIDIA(0): EDID maximum pixel clock : 0.0 MHz

Unless this problem didn't exist in older drivers, this looks like an issue with your CRT. You can attempt to work around it by setting UseEDID to false in the Device section of xorg.conf. See the driver README for more information.

Thanks,
Lonni

this does n't exist in older drivers (before 9xxx) , like 8776 ,
I will try your solution (false edid)
Thank you

I'd like to see a bug report against an older driver where the problem wasn't present.

Cool Re: screens 's resolution llmited to 800x600 with 9xxx drviers

Hi,
here is a bug-report against an 8776 driver where the problem wasn't present.

(with a 2.6.16.19 kernel, 8776 don't compile with recent kernel)
Bests Regards.

In this bug report I see:
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Unable to read EDID for display device CRT-1

So the only difference is that in the past the EDID couldn't be read at all, and with current drivers it is read but returns bogus information. This points to a problem with your CRT.

Thanks,
Lonni

You could report the problem to DAEWO0. Beyond that, I don't have any other suggestions, as there isn't any evidence to suggest that this is an nvidia driver bug.

The EDID is read as:
(--) NVIDIA(0): Raw EDID bytes:
(--) NVIDIA(0):
(--) NVIDIA(0): ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff
(--) NVIDIA(0): ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff
(--) NVIDIA(0): ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff
(--) NVIDIA(0): ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff
(--) NVIDIA(0): ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff
(--) NVIDIA(0): ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff
(--) NVIDIA(0): ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff
(--) NVIDIA(0): ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff
(--) NVIDIA(0): 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
(--) NVIDIA(0): 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
(--) NVIDIA(0): 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
(--) NVIDIA(0): 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
(--) NVIDIA(0): 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
(--) NVIDIA(0): 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
(--) NVIDIA(0): 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
(--) NVIDIA(0): 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

Seems to be easy enough to recognize this as invalid and proceed as if no EDID is available, instead of extracting values from it and then rejecting all modes.

Future versions of the NVIDIA driver will be better at detecting bad EDIDs.

koolshen, pe1chl, try to have a look at http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=80317 and http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=81635, there's a nice workaround to fix corrupt EDID datas (even if passing in Windows)

Hope it can help you
