Can't make FSAA and AF work on my box

When I enter with

export GL_FSAA_MODE=5

and

export GL_DEFAULT_LOG_ANISO=3

nothing happens in my fedora core 1 with a GF4 TI4200 using the 53.36 drivers. I am executing these commands as root

The commands do not produce any error message but simply does not function.
Any idea of what can be happening?

The environment variable is __GL_FSAA_MODE, not GL_FSAA_MODE.
