I have 4 GB of DDR2 to try. Right now I am testing with 2 GB. I will do some testing Sunday afternoon.

Too expensive for me and the heatpipe cannot be inverted.
Yes, I am reading a lot of bad things about the EVGA but mine is solid - so far (running for 4 weeks).
However, I would suggest that this chipset/ board is not for "noobs".

Post up what you thought please on the memory and what you were able to get. What kind of memory are you using again?

Been reading with interest and yes I'm a noob (ish anyway), but I've took the plunge and bought the parts for my new PC and I am interested in any advice for how to set up the memory/FSB for optimum performance. This is my first time with an Intel CPU since my 386.

Anyway, parts purchased are :-

Asus Striker Extreme, Intel Quad Core QX6700, Corsair Dominator Twin2X2048-8888C4DF, Thermaltake Tai-Chi Case with Water-cooling, Enermax Galaxy 1000W PSU, 2 X BFG 8800GTX OC2 768MB, 2 X Western Digital Raptor 150GB, Hitachi Deskstar T7K500 500GB, Samsung SM-226BW 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor

I realise I've probably made a few dodgy choices, but it's too late now and hopefully nothing is too bad, I certainly hope not for the ammount of money it has cost.

Do I overclock? Do I need to? What settings to get the best out of my Memory/CPU combination? What are safe voltages to push to? (this is always something that worries me)

Any advice or comments are welcome.

don't buy anything with a 680i chipset!! stick with Intel P965 or 975 unless you enjoy RMA'ing your hardware and not being able to use your computer.

Can someone explain the ASUS Striker Extreme memory situation if you use all 4 DIMM sockets but do not overclock?

We cannot get EVGA products in Australia, these are my choices for motherboards:
http://www.scorptec.com.au/browse/19/486
(out of those choices ASUS is far and away my first choice, the only other brands I'd even consider being Gigabyte & Abit).

I plan on using the Intel QX6700 quad core cpu (Yes, I know not much difference between two and 4 cores atm, but I expect that will change with upcoming games due to multiple cpu's in the consoles).

I plan on using 4 gig of this memory (nvidia SLI certified) http://www.scorptec.com.au/product/21077
There are no 2 gig DIMMS available @1066mhz

For graphics I intend to use 2x http://www.auspcmarket.com.au/show_p...info.php?input[product_code]=AL-IV-8800GTX&input[category_id]=1506

I'm not sure whether to go this way (nforce 680i seems to be quite troublesome) or build a system around a gigabyte nForce590 + AMD6000+ (not as powerful overall, but seems like it would be more stable).

Both these sites sell EVGA products... The first site pc case gear I have personally ordered stuff from and received my packages on time with no hassle... As for the second site someone else on this forum mentioned it, the site only sells EVGA stuff ... Anyhow knowing this I still went and bought the ASUS Striker Extreme and unlike my friend who bought the EVGA I haven't had any troubles, while his boards died on him through 5 replacements before he got a stable board.. Only problem I had with my rig was the dam PSU being faulty even though it was brand new

Didn't know that, however I still wouldn't get the EVGA -- I stick to proper motherboard manufacturers, and to be honest nvidia reference designs don't inspire much confidence I still remember the horror that was the MSI k7N420 Pro (though I blame MSI at least as much as nvidia there).

What PSU was that?

If I am not going to overclock (I won't be) is it worthwhile going with the 1066mhz memory (I'm hoping the extra bandwidth over and above that required by the cpu can be put to good use by the graphics subsystem etc and linkboost)

I have four 1gig sticks of PC2 8500C5 Dominator in my Evga 680i SLI and with just one set I am able to reach 1200mhz at 5-5-5-15-2T at 2.3v and I have the Dominator fan ,but my other pair tops out at 1165mhz and with all four of them installed the highest I can reach is 1100mhz,so it hurt my overclocking some, but I run them at 800mhz 4-3-3-8-2T 2.05v because I run my system at a 1:1 ratio at 3.6gigs

hmm... both my 1gb Corsair 8500C5D modules work fine at 1200mhz 5-5-5-15 2.3v...

maybe you got one with Micron chips and the other with Promos?

Wait for the EVGA 680i LT SLI or get the hybrid chipset solution, i.e, Asus P5N32-E SLI Plus.
