Thumbs up Re: nVidia driver 1.0-96xx causes glitches, artifacts and crashes on Ubuntu Edgy/Feis

Thank you, netllama!

In answer:

- No need to load a dataset into Maya, it flakes out regardless.

- Disabling TwinView doesn't affect it -- listboxes still garble when scrolled.

- Disabling Composite (thanks for the recipe)
avoids the problem. Listboxes behave fine.

If I see other flaky behavior that looks like missed bitblts,
I'll post it here. But for now, all's well!

stuartlevy,
I'm afraid that this sounds like expected behavior. Maya uses an overlay to render alot of its menus & widgets. Overlays are not expected to work with Composite, currently. If disabling Composite completely eliminates the problems, then I suspect you're not hitting the same problem(s) as others have reported in this thread.

thanks,
Lonni

Hmm. I imagine that the Maya graphical menus - the ones that pop up on
top of their 3-D graphics windows, say - might well be overlays.
But I'm talking about a standard Motif listbox widget, which maya uses
for e.g. selecting lists of plugins. Do you expect that to use overlays,
too? I'd be surprised if it did.

So, do you have any idea what might cause these issues, or how to work around the problem? Anything helpfull at all?

If you don't, what about the 1.0-8776 driver, there must be a way to compile it on Feisty's 2.6.20 kernel? I attached an installer log some time ago.

All the widgets for the menus are in overlays. This includes the standard Motif widgets as well. This is why you get corruption on cards with only one overlay available (ie. consumer "game" oriented cards.) This topic has been beaten to death on the Maya forums and they specifically called out GeForce users in one of their hardware FAQs (I think it was when Unlimited v5 came out. I guess the support staff was a bit miffed at the time.) Either emulate planes in software or use a DCC class card (that is on the Qualified HW list) or A/W won't even talk to you.

This http://discussion.autodesk.com/threa...sageID=5499540 on the Maya forums seems relevant.

- Todd.

I have done a in-depth study of the problem. Let me clear some stuff up.
- The artifacts appear when using the nvidia driver, they do not appear with the nv driver.
- This happens with the default Feisty 9631 drivers and with the latest (9755) drivers downloaded from the nVidia website.
- Disabling the composite extension does not affect the results.
- Using Option "RenderAccel" "false" fixes the artifacs.

When I run glxgears with the nv drivers everything is smooth. With the nvidia drivers the gears are very choppy and are not rendered correctly. The only way I was able to get them to render correctly with the nvidia driver is if I resize the window until the gears are so large that it lowers the framerate down to a halt. With about 1 frame per second or less the gears were rendered smooth and appeared correct to me.

I have attached some screenshots, logs, and reports.

Thank you.

Here are some more 2D and 3D screenshots of the artifacts/corruption.

For the Synaptic pictures, look closely at the buttons and progress bars.

Oh, and this affects Ubuntu Feisty Fawn in both the i386 and AMD64 versions.

Interesting. I have the 6600GT as well and it runs flawlessly on my AMD64 PC (which is using an ATI chipset mobo no less!) I didn't see your kernel option line -- make sure you have "noagp" in there as this is a PCI-E card and the kernel doesn't always do the right thing when auto-detecting. There was the MMIO error in there as well that should be resolved.

The nv driver is somewhat accelerated 2D and doesn't do hardward 3D. That GLXGEARs runs with it is rather meaningless as if GLXGEARS didn't render through MESA (which supplied GLXGEARS in the first place) I would be rather worried. (It's part of their demo suite.) What is interesting is that there appears to be a pattern to the corruption in the screen shots you sent. Does the problem always present itself in the same manner?

Just wanted to add my name to the list of users experiencing this problem. I'm using a BFG GeForce 6800GT OC AGP card, Ubuntu Edgy, Beryl, and latest drivers. There are no current BIOS updates for my Asus A7V333 mobo, so that's out of the question. I just purchased this card specifically to run Beryl on Ubuntu and if no fix is forthcoming, will be trying to sell this card. (my first experience with a Nvidia card, and it could well be the last one I ever purchase)

It seems that the problem is time based as things will work fine for a day or a little longer and then the problem rears its ugly head forcing a restart of GDM.

Cheers.

I think I tried the noagp option, but it didn't help. I'll try it again and let you know what happens.
Yes, I did notice that the rendering glitches are in a pattern. It always renders it the same way. It seems as if it is trying to complete the rendering, but doesn't finish it completely. It doesn't make sense though because I am getting crazy fast frames per second.
