Default Poor performance 1.0-9746 / Quadro NVS 280 PCI / FC6-x86-2.6.19-1

Hello Everyone

A couple of days ago i installed a Quadro NVS 280 PCI on my FC-6 System running a stock 2.6.19-1.2911.6.4.fc6. The system is an Asus Pundit (P4S8L MB) with a 2400MHz Celeron Processor / 1280 MB RAM. The nvidia driver used is 1.0-9746.

2-D as well as 3-D performance is very poor. As an example, tvtime and kdetv it up all of the cpu time and yet don't run properly, xawtv needs 55%.

Glxgears reports 70fps on a 1600x1200 screen.

The SPECviewperf9.0 results:

3dsmax-04 Weighted Geometric Mean = 0.7973
catia-02 Weighted Geometric Mean = 0.9961
ensight-03 Weighted Geometric Mean = 0.3797
light-08 Weighted Geometric Mean = 0.4124
maya-02 Weighted Geometric Mean = 0.5673
proe-04 Weighted Geometric Mean = 0.3225
sw-01 Weighted Geometric Mean = 0.6099
ugnx-01 Weighted Geometric Mean = 0.1375
tcvis-01 Weighted Geometric Mean = 0.1482

In comparision to this, the lousy onboard sis graphics looks like a sprinter.

After searching for possible reasons for this bad performance and spending hours reading possibly related postings on the board, i would like to ask for help here.

Thanks for any help.

I'm attaching the results of nvidia-bug-report.sh.

You're using a PCI bus graphics card, so I'd guess that you're getting heavily limited by the much slower PCI bus speeds (as compared to AGP or PCI-E). Its been quite a while since I've benchmarked any PCI graphics cards with SPEC Viewperf, as they really aren't considered to be a performance solution.

About the only thing that I can suggest at this point is to run X at a smaller resolution than 1600x1200 and also to verify that you're using the latest motherboard BIOS. Beyond that, I think you're hitting hardware limitations.

Thanks,
Lonni

Thanks for the advice. I know about PCI's limitations, I do use the latest bios version, and a smaller desktop does not change much.

The system used is a barebone that offers two PCI slots for expansion only. Even considering this, i was hoping to get a better performance then with the very poor onboard sis graphics.

I was expecting at least decent 2D performance allowing the usage with desktop and multimedia applications. But right now, i can watch the windows moving, drawing traces on the desktop, and after 1 or 2 seconds, finally settling at their new location. Wondering how this card can be a member of nvidias "professional series" if this is the performance one has to be happy with.

PCi is 8x slower then AGPx4, but the benchmark results I got are far worse than that. How can it be, that users of other low end cards report glxgears performances in the range of 4000-5000 FPS at 1600x1200 even in dual head configuration and I'm getting lousy 70fps on a single screen? 70 times slower can't be due to the PCI bus only, can it?

How much slower is the PCI version of the NVS 280 supposed to be compared to the AGP one, and do you have benchmark results for it?

I suspect this might also have a relationship to the motherboard that you're using, as I don't remember anyone ever reporting performance as bad as what you're describing. What is the output from glxinfo ?

Hello Lonni

Did you find the time to look at the nvidia-bug-report.log and glxinfo I posted? I followed the information provided on this site to make sure nvidias driver is installed properly and can't find any hints for a mistake in the logfiles. Spent quite some time on the board to find explanations without success.

I appreciate all help you can provide to resolve this issue. All I want is to be able to use this piece of hardware for the purposes it is being sold and has been bought for.

Can't be asked too much, even for a PCI card to run a desktop and associated programs smoothly I guess. I was hoping to be able to use XGL and compiz for my desktop, but that is out of question with the performance at hand. Right now even running KDE with a simple theme isn't fun.

In which way you think the problem might be motherboard related and how can I help to narrow down the reasons for the very poor performance and resolve the problem?

I'll happily provide all information you might need to investigate this issue.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Yes, I reviewed what youv'e provided, and I don't see any obvious reasons why the performance is poor beyond what I've already mentioned. This looks like a motherboard limitation.

Thanks for the quick reply. Is the Asus P4S8L motherboard known to perform bad with the NVS 280 PCI card? I've used various PCI cards in combination with this motherboard and never had performance problems. As mentioned, i'm already using the newest bios. Besides that i tried both of the available PCI slots, because one of them shares IRQ with other resources - there was no difference in performance.

Could u be a bit more specific about why or in what way you think the motherboard is the culprit?

And what would u suggest i should do to finally be able to use this nvidia card resonably. I'm just not prepared to accept this crippled performance.

I honestly don't know anything about that motherboard, however no one else has reported severe performance problems with this card in the past, so I'm left to believe that the issue is with your setup there.

Do you have a different system you can test in?

Nope. Don't have physical access to any other suitable system at the moment.
