"Powerstroke Diesel"
|
Is something burning in my pc or it just me? My CPU is running at around 47c and I was watching it the entire time, while encoding a movie. I could hear it making a noise almost like the HD was writing except it was coming from the processor, as I never use to be able to hear my HD like this before.
Now when I was doing this the smell of almost as if wood was burning. I left the room came back and it even smelt stronger. Everything is operating as it should. So whats going on?

bad chip?
I just ran a ton of "suicide" benchmarks on my E6600 @ 3.2Ghz on stock cooling, and I heard the "noise" you're talking about, but there was no smell. However, when electronics are burning, it does not smell like wood burning. It has a very distinct and strong smell. turn of the system, and ventilate your room. If the smell goes completely away, it's probably your computer. If you're unsure, turn the computer back on. if the smell arises again, you need to find out what's causing that smell and fix it. Burning is never good for computer parts.

Yeah that noise is odd... but it could be I got my window open. Like I said its idling cool, and even performing excellent. It use to take me almost 1HR to encode a video it done it 20 minutes time with Nero Vision. Love this chip..

Most likely it wouldn't have anything at all to do with your processor and how hot it is running, but rather your PSU or motherboard. Sounds to me like your PSU might be starting to crap out, and if it does there's a chance it could take everything connected to it down with it.

However, I would make it a priority to figure out where the smell is coming from first. On the Antec Nine Hundred case, the PSU is at the bottom, which is a good distance from the processor. If the smell is coming from around the processor, chances are it's not the PSU. And please tell me you put the fan on the FSB Heatsink near the processor... EDIT. I have a way to figure it out, and it shouldn't be too hard either. Power off your system. Disconnnect your case fans from the power source so they won't run *LEAVE THE CPU AND NORTHBRIDGE FAN CONNECTED! Keep the side panel on your case off. Power on your system, get it running and smell away. Report back if you find anything.

Just appears to be a smell from within the house, I do believe. The noise is still strange. I can't think of any processor making noise since my old Intel Celeron 400MHz HP.
Oh CPU is 40c idle on a cold day, if its warm and toasty in here it will idle at 42-44. Gaming in games like BF2 or Splinter Cell have no effect on the temps. I mean they go up 2 or 3 degrees but nothing like what I've seen prime95 do, or TAT. They also do not make the noise in most games that I can tell not even in the Intel Demo.

Sounds like you're good to go then.
Glad it wasn't your computer. The Noise from your processor is probably normal. Is it high pitched and feverish sometimes?
