Maybe try with loading safe settings in bios or perhaps try disabling agp before.
Add
Code:
  Option "NvAGP" "0"
to section device and restart.

Seems like ati mb are not linux-friendly.

Thanks Kriko, I think I'll forget about any ATI hardware for a while then, and get a nForce 500 mobo.

By the way, it really looks like we should be blaming ATI for building the crappy 480 chipset, or the mobo manufacturer for using it. Does anyone know if any of them actually runs a forum where they take their linux customers' problems into account? I don't think so... That is very unfortunate indeed.

Years ago ati had a web-form for contacting about graphic driver related issues for linux (which was anyway probably redirected to /dev/null), so there must be some way to contact them about the problem.

I don't know if the problem is on the chipset's side or on the 7300's one; anyway, I found easier pulling out my 7300 and now, with a "stupid" Ati X300, I have finally hardware graphic acceleration.
It's 2 weeks, now, and not even one crash.
Sad thing that I bought that 7300 for its claimed superior support in linux environments

P.S. and I can't but observe the looong silence by Nvidia on this thread and the others opened in the past

But they already responded that they are unable to reproduce this. Maybe there are different revisions of this morherboards...

We recently purchased another RS482 based mainboard; with this mainboard and a GeForce 7300GS, I was able to reproduce a stability problem similar to that seen with a variety of GeForce 6200 and some ATi chipsets. This problem should be worked around in future driver releases, but judging from the number of reports on this forum, there may be other stability problems with some GPUs specific to certain ATi chipsets (and/or mainboards based on it) that we've been unable to reproduce.

Thanks for your answer in this thread. I have replace my RS480 based motherboard (Asus M2R32-MVP) with a nvidia nForce500 based motherboard (M2N-E SLI), and the freezing disqppears. If you are interested in a test motherboard, mine can become yours...

Smile Re: nvidia 7300 and ATI RS480/482 chipset incompatibilities (driver BUG)

I noticed this issue only appears when using openGL, but as I can't do anything after it freeze I can't retrieve any error log.

Is there something helpful to do ?

You could try setting up a serial console
Next step is starting X with the following command:
startx -- -verbose 5 -logverbose 5
Reproduce the problem hoping that something useful is written at the remote console

I tried the "startx -- -verbose 5 -logverbose 5"

- x starts ok
- I've run 4 glxgears (but nothing more in the Xorg log)
- I've run a fifth glxgears and it locks
- after a restart nothing more in the Xorg log
