Default Core2 E6600 a mid-range CPU?!?!?

I saw a copy of Maximum PC today, and I was surprised to find that they ranked the Core2 E6600 as a "mid-range" CPU. Wow, that's a pretty demanding rating system! What would that make an Athlon 64 X2 4600+?Entry level? I would consider an Athlon 64 3800+ "entry-level" by today's standards. Any Core2 CPU from the E6400 up would be high-end for me. A good mid-range CPU would be the Athlon 64 X2 4200+ and the Core2 E6300.

With the new scale that Intel set, it technically is. The E6700 is higher then it as are the QX6600 and QX6700.

I guess the mid-range CPUs would cover a lot of ground. For example, there's a BIG difference between an E6600 and an Athlon 64 X2 4200+, yet both would be considered mid-range CPUs. Only the Core2 Extreme X6800 and Core2 Quad Q6600 would be high-end. Almost all of us have mid-range CPUs then?

For me, just about any Core2 CPU except the E6300 or E4300 would be high-end. The same would be true for any Athlon 64 X2 5000+ and up. Of course, what is high-end today will be mid-range next month.

LOL!

I've got a damn good mid-range CPU.

BTW, last time I checked, the E6600's are just starting to trickle down into places like circuit city and best buy. Before now, it's been exclusively E6300's and 6400's for high end systems.

I dont really care what they are "rated" as, once you overclock it doesn't matter. I'll take a 3.4GHz C2D for $300 any day.

True. Overclocking changes everything, and no CPU does it better than the Core 2. I have yet to see a system at BB or Circuit City with an E6600 for less than $1999.

Well for less than $315, you pay mid-range CPU prices for a high-range performer (esp if you OC). And in by the end of April, they're supposed to be dropping to the ~$230's!

Yeah it's kind of mid range. I'll give a scale of 0-10 rating for each core 2 processor that I can think of. (5 is middle of the road avg)

3 e6300
4 e6400
5.5 e6600
7 dual core extreme
9.5 q6600
10 quad core extreme.

I would recommend waiting for the price to come down on the q6600. It should go down in the next 5 weeks. I cant think of anything better about the xtreme quad. IMO, it's a waste of money w/ the q6600 around.

I wonder if tricks sill exist where you can mod either the CPU or the motherboard to unlock multipliers. I rememebr back with the AMD XP chips this was a huge thing you were able to do...
