I agree with everyone else that overclocking does change everything and that an e6600 at stock really should be considered midrange.

That's why E6320|E6420s are going to be so nice. They will have a native 7x|8x multi, 4mb L2 cache, cost well under 200usd and likely do 3.5.-3.7 with little problem. Get a solid 965 board and you'll be gtg.

Unless you have exotic cooling like LN2 and do some seriously extreme overclocking, the mentioned up coming chips are likely your best bet for dual core aftermarket air overclocking.

The E6600 is indeed a mid-range CPU and a rank amateur with an average aftermarket cooler can get 3.2GHz out of it with no voltage increases in most cases.

I'll eventually go quad core and even with good water cooling it will likely clock lower than this C2D. There are folks having trouble taming highly overclocked quad cores with vapochills.
