Oh yeah Jakup? Then go for a 50w quad xeon... :P Obviously, that won't be a problem down the road as the 50w quads xeons are already available

That's a good point? What are the current quads? 65?

The alternative is much too disturbing to ponder.

I've been doing some reading on the Barcelona architecture and it has some nice features and the new on die memory controller looks like a winner for efficiency and speed.

I suggest we all sit back, refrain from ludicrous speculation and just patiently wait for the "next big thing" Meanwhile we enjoy our fancy dancy C2Q chips at a better price and overall value.

I don't believe that low price will happen anyway.
AMD has been declared dead before. Then they created the Athlon.

They definitely have their work cut out for them over the next several quarters, and they're in for a world of hurt if the K8L isn't all it's cracked up to be. But if it is a success, they'll just have to have endured a couple of quarters of lost marketshare and they'll be right back in the thick of it. Sometimes the market works like that- the person on top is the one that had the last major product release.

Anyways I doubt even Intel knows exactly what that chip will cost in the 4th quarter, that's going to depend on market conditions at the time and what other products they have available. They'll price it wherever they think they'll gain the most profit from it. If the K8L is a bust, they won't have to worry about it. If the K8L rocks, they may need some aggressive pricing.

I am still debating quad core. A 266usd one is tempting.

In the future AMD may indeed have a chip that is clock for clock faster than C2D. I'll be looking at their cost and more importantly, how far they overclock on air. If they can't get beyond 3.1-3.2GHz on air you'd still be better off with C2D, particularly with chips like the E6320|E6420 coming out. (163|183usd) If they are anything like the current crop of C2D you should be able to do 3.5-3.8GHz on air using 965, with 3.2 being effortless.

I think Intel is supposed to debut their first 45nm chips during Q3 of this year. If so, we're about 6 months away from the next major overhaul to an already incredible line of processors.

As for Barcelona, it had better get in and kick some intel butt. Otherwise, this market is going to start to hurt with no competition on the market.

BTW, I know when I'm going to Quad Core now.

I would not say that. If you recall... the old Athlon XP Lines ran almost a whole 1Ghz below the P4's but ran worlds better.. expecially with an OC (which would still keep it under P4 speeds). Speed matters but its hardly the only factor in how well a CPU performs.

I'd like to see what Intel has up their sleeves. If they drop out affordable quads this year, it'll be a good time to upgrade next year (price drops ftw).

By then, they'll have Yorktown and other architectures out. Everyone will win.
