Default Configure 3 displays on SLES 9 using nvidia Quadro NVS 440

We are trying to setup 3 monitors on an HP xw6400 Workstation running SLES 9 (SP3) using an NVIDIA GPU Quadro NVS 440 graphics card.
For those who are not familiar with the card, it's a single PCIe card with two ports. A VGA adaptor which splits into two VGA outputs is connected on each port on the card, thus one can connect up to 4 monitors in total.

We were able to setup X to use two monitors as separate desktops that are connected to the first port of the Quadro 440 card, but we cannot setup the third monitor connected to the second port of th Quadro 440 card (it remains blank).
We also succeeded to use both monitors connected to the second port (of the Quadro 440), but then the third monitor connected to the first port (of the Quadro 440) remained black. So, it seems that we cannot configure both ports of the graphics card at the same time as you may see from the attached logs.

This is our setup & configuration:

system: HP xw6400 Workstation
operating system: SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9 (i586), SP3
kernel: 2.6.5-7.244-smp

nvidia driver: NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9746-pkg1.run
(we've also used older versions with no luck)

extract from the /etc/X11/XF86Config file:
(look at the attachment -- we'll provide whole file if requested)

extract from lspci output:
(look at the attachment -- we'll provide whole output if requested)

extract from the /var/log/XFree86.0.0.log
(look at the attachment -- we'll provide whole file if requested)

Any help and suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

The X log that you attached appears to have been manually edited, and isn't terribly useful. Please see:

All that I'm seeing in your bug report is:
NVRM: RmInitAdapter failed! (0x23:0xffffffff:679)
NVRM: rm_init_adapter(1) failed

I have a few questions:
0) Did this NVS440 ship with the xw6400 ?
1) Does this problem persist if you update to the latest BIOS for the xw6400 ?
2) Does this problem persist if you boot with the noapic and/or acpi=off kernel parameters?
3) Does this problem persist with a more recent kernel?

Thanks,
Lonni

Thank you for your reply. These are the answer to your questions:

0. Yes
1. We updated to the one before the latest i.e. 2.10 and still the same
2. tried all different combinations (noapic, acpi=off, noapic & acpi=off), but still the same
3. A more recent kernel is at this point not an option as, our environment, being a mission critical, is very static and such changes can not be implemented.
However, we might try just to see if a kernel update would solve the problem, but again this would not be a solution for us.

Novell support says that the problem is using a proprietary nVidia kernel module, thus this cannot be covered by SUSE/Novell support, however they will look if they can find anything else.

<4>nvidia: module not supported by Novell, setting U taint flag.

Yes, it would be useful to know whether a recent 2.6.x kernel.org kernel makes any difference. If so, then we'd know that this is a kernel bug and not an nvidia driver bug.

Default Re: Configure 3 displays on SLES 9 using nvidia Quadro NVS 440

We tried the following things:

1. updated the bios on the xw6400 to the latest one (v2.015)
2. booted kernel with the following paraemeters (one after the other)

apic
noapic
acpi=oldboot
pci=noacpi
acpi=off
noapic & acpi=off

but did not have any success.

We also tried another scenario since we had a similar system with a similar card in our lab.

Specifically,

1. we took out an Quadro4 200/400 NVS card out of an hp workstation xw6200 and put it on the HP xw6400 Workstation. We installed the Quadro NVS 440 card on the xw6200 workstation.

2. on the xw6400 system we tried to re-install the 1.0.9746 nvidia driver, but it complained that the Quadro 200/400 is a legacy card and is not supported by this driver, so we had to downgrade to 1.0.9631

3. we booted the xw6400 and after changing the XF86Config configuration file we were able to get our 3-display set up !!!

We performed the same steps on the xw6200 system except that we did not change the nvidia driver which is still version 1.0.7676. We just re-installed it and after changing the XF86Config configuration file we were able to get our 3-display set up on this system as well !!!

This is a comparison table between the two systems and the two card models (see attached file).

The only thing changed on the xw6400 workstation when swapping the cards (except downgrading the nvidia driver) was the PCI slot, as the
Quadro4 200/400 NVS card is a PCI card and not a PCI-e as the Quadro NVS 440 card. So, I guess there should be an I/O resource issue/conflict.

When swaping the cards back to their original systems we also used a different PCI-e slot on the xw6400 system (than the one we had before) just
to verify that there was no problem with that particular slot and we also kept the previous version of the nvidia driver (1.0.9631), but again our 3-display setup did not work.

Any other ideas/suggestions are welcomed.

Default Re: Configure 3 displays on SLES 9 using nvidia Quadro NVS 440

We are glad to announce the successful resolution of setting up the NVIDIA Quadro NVS 440 graphics card on the HP xw6400 workstation.

To recap, this what we wanted to do:

We wanted to set up a Quadro4 440 NVS graphics card on an HP xw6400 Workstation and configure it with a 3 screen so we could have separate X Desktops on each screen.

After numerous experiments with different nvidia drivers, fresh installations of the operating system, upgrades of kernel, etc. we still could not resolve the problem.
We knew that the same configuration was working on another system (HP xw6200) using the same NVIDIA Quadro NVS 440 graphics card and same drivers. It was only when performing a new OS installation on the xw6200, where the same configuration did not work, when we could actually compare identical things:

- same hardware (HP xw6200 Workstation, Quadro4 440 NVS graphics card)
- same OS, kernel, patches, etc. (SLES 9, 2.6.5-7.244-smp, patchlevel 3)
- same nvidia driver (1.0.9755)
- older installation --> working configuration / fresh installation --> not working configuration

After examining a couple of files we noticed that the kernel in the fresh (default) installation was booting with the option vga=0x31a. This option allows you to select a particular video mode (e.g. standard 80x25 mode available on all display adapters (normal VGA), standard 8-pixel font mode: 80x43 on EGA, 80x50 on VGA (extended VGA), etc.)

It seems that booting with this parameter the system loads the VESA framebuffer which at some points conflicts with the nvidia driver, thus not allowing to configure the NVIDIA Quadro NVS 440 (both ports at the same time).

Removing just this option from the boot loader we were able to set up all 3 monitors to work simultaneously using the the NVIDIA Quadro NVS 440 graphics card.
