How does CPU-GPU comms in SLI mode operate?

I have a quad Opteron box with two GeForce 8800GTX SLI connected. My question is when SLI is enabled does the CPU send the data to only the master GPU and data is shared over the SLI interface or does the CPU transfer the same data to both GPUs?

The data is sent to both cards. The bridge card is for synchronization purposes or something like that.
