Default AMD64x2, FC6, Scrambeld -White Dots Screen on Boot

Hello ,

I need some help configuring the nvidia driver for fc6.

I have installed successfully the nvidia driver NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-9755-pkg2.run (that included updating the kernel to 2.6.20-1.2933, installation of pkgconfig, xorg-x11-server-sdk, gcc and kernel-devel).

When booting into run level 5, after i see the nvidia logo splash screen, instead of the usual login screen, I get a screen full of white dots. However if I switch to run level 3, I can login and run startx, but when I am trying to go back to shell alt+ctrl+f1 I receive again a white dotted screen (see the attached nvidia-bug-report.log)

I am running a dual core AMD 64bit laptop, with a 6150 Geforce GO adapter, and following the advise published in the forum I set the kernel option idle=poll. Also I have disabled SELinux environment by setting selinux=0.

I have also attached the xorg.conf file , that was set by nvidia-xconfig and the Xorg.log file.

Thank you for your help

I have a few questions:
0) Does this problem persist if you remove 'rhgb quiet' from your GRUB configuration (and reboot)?
1) Was the attached bug report generated while this problem was present?
2) Have you verified that you're using the latest BIOS?

thanks,
Lonni

0) I have removed 'rhgb quiet' from GRUB configuration. Then, I could see the login screen on boot from run level 5 (THANKS!!), but the problem remains when I am trying to go into shell by ctrl+alt+f1, or when I am shutting down/restarting .

1) The bug report sent previously was produced as follows:
I have rebooted into run level 3, ran `startx -- -logverbose 6` , pressed alt+ctrl+f1, saw a scrambeld screen, pressed ctrl+alt+del (reboot), then ran `nvidia-bug-report.sh`

2) Following your question, I have updated, succesfully, my bios to it's latest version (F.28 for HP Pavilion). However, Now, boot fails. I get the following message:
0000:00:0d.0: cannot adjust BAR0 (not I/O).

Should I install fc6 from scratch?

I doubt that reinstalling the OS is going to change anything. The problem that you're hitting after updating the BIOS is a BIOS bug.

I know it sucks to get posts like this, but I have the exact same problem.

I'm on a pavilion, FC6. I got everything working great, except excessive heat (80+c), and of course, the same scramble screen / white dot issue.

Something I should have tried before posting this is whether or not it happens using the regular "nv" driver...

I'll post back with my findings.

2) The HP Bios F.28 can't work with kernel-2.6.2XXX.

0) Removing 'rhgb' from GRUB enables booting without whit dots screen. The Ctrl+Alt+F1 / restart / shutdown problem remains.

Any solution to excessive heat?

No clue yet on the heat problem either...

1) The open-source NV driver appears to work wonderfully and I can Ctrl-Alt-F1 - F6 through virtual consoles and it works as expected.

2) open-gl no longer works.

3) This puts the problem back into the drivers. I wonder if OLD nvidia drivers would work better?

I'll try that later.

putting :
vga=0x318 video=vesafb:mtrr:3,ywrap,1024x768-32@85

at the kernel line of grub, solves the ctrl+alt+f1 problem
