The Ubuntu kernel has everything enabled. By building a custom one, I'm trying to isolate the problem.

I still don't have any clue as to why it won't work. As mentioned before, it has worked before without any workarounds, but now it just seems like all options fail with the driver using agp one way or the other.

What happens when you issue the following command:
modprobe via-agp ?

It doesn't change a thing.

I now did a clean install of my Ubuntu. Installed the standard nvidia-glx package (9755)..........same problem again.....
I updated my BIOS to the latest stable.......same problem......

Pardon my French but what the f*ck?! nvagp needs agpgart to compile but after that it's chaos and conflict all over. And I don't even know if nvagp is even called on my system, let alone built!
Am I doomed to look at a groggy-3D-accelerated desktop ?

If you're not able to enable AGP support with the native AGP driver in the kernel, its unlikely you're going to see better results with the NVIDIA's agp driver.

For people who may be experiencing the same problem.....I found a solution.

I probably used every swear word in the book, but finally I stumbled upon the answer.
I've been compiling kernels and playing with settings all the time. Including agpgart, excluding it, including parts of it etc. Blacklisting stuff, loading different modules but it never ever seemed to work.
My eye fell on the fact that Linux (in general) wasn't able to recognize my AGP card as just that, an AGP card. So my attention was drawn elsewhere. I checked BIOS settings over and over, played with some as well but that didn't work either.
So back to the modules to see what could be tampering with hardware detection and this is where it happened!
Every video-related (nvidia/agpgart) entry showed me i2c modules as well, so I entered
Code:
lsmod|grep i2c
in a terminal, opened another terminal and entered
Code:
nano /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
and copied the exact names given to me by lsmod to the blacklist.
I commented out any AGP related option in my xorg.conf (thus leaving it at default options) and hoped for the best. The system rebooted and it showed me the nVidia splash. I checked nvidia-settings and it said AGP 8x at the gpu info. Doing
Code:
cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/*
showed me AGP is enabled at 8x using the agpgart driver.

Success!!
