Default Slow nVidia 5200. 10 fps with glxgears!

Hello all,

I have a nVidia 5200 that doesn't seem to be working correctly. I'm using driver version 1.0.9746 installed both manually using a guide in the Ubuntu forum, and then again using the excellent "envy" installer.

When Ubuntu boots into the log in screen, the 'fade' seems to stutter, which I wouldn't expect. I also notice a lot of stuttering in Penguin Planet Racer (or whatever it's called). I only have a 1 gig athlon machine, but I would have thought the card could handle this just fine.

Then someone suggested I run 'glxgears -printfps' and I'm shocked to find that I get just over 10 fps. Any ideas what could be going on? Here's my xorg.conf

I've also tried changing composite to disable based on one suggestion I had, but that didn't work either.

Any ideas?

Sorry for not reading that page. I was too eager to post a question to try and sort out my hardware. Hopefully I'm attaching everything I should now ...

Do these offer any more clues?

I'm not sure what's going on. The performance seems really bad. Is my hardware faulty?

Thanks
Damian

Was this bug report generated while the problem was present?
Does this problem persist with 1.0-9755, as 1.0-9746 is no longer supported?
Have you verified that you're using the most recent motherboard BIOS?
What is the output from glxinfo ?

thanks,
Lonni

Default Re: Slow nVidia 5200. 10 fps with glxgears!

I've just updated the driver to 1.0-9755 using the 'Envy' installer in Ubuntu. The problem is persisting. I believe I have the latest bios for my mother board. It's by no means modern, but shouldn't be too old. It's an Abit KT7-raid.

I'll do a bug report thing while 'glxgears' is actually running now and attach the file ...

I've tried the following:
Tweaking mb bios settings
Adding "NvAGP" "1" (and "3") to xorg.conf
Removing "int10", "vnc", "vbe" from loading in xorg.conf
'killall acroread' - this didn't seem to do anything for me, but someone on a different forum noted that he was having the same problem .. 8 fps, and running killall acroread shot his glxgears score up to 1300

Here's what comes out when I type glxinfo:

Just noticed this line:
OpenGL renderer string: GeForce FX 5200/PCI/3DNOW!
Does that mean it thinks it's using a PCI card? It's an AGP card I have in there. I don't think this motherboard even has PCI Express or anything like that.

Have you tested with anything other than glxgears?

Does this problem persist if you remove NvAGP from xorg.conf?

Yes, the reason I ran glxgears was because the display seemed sluggish to me. Seems perfect doing standard desktop stuff, but fades seem to jutter and Penguin Planet Racer stutters much more than I'd expect from this card (I know I only have a 1Gig Athlon processor, but I'd have thought that was plenty with a half decent card).
Also, can't get XcMV working in MythTV

The NvAGP line has only recently been added at the suggestion of someone in the MythTV forum. It was the same without it.

Can you check in the BIOS to see if there is an AGP aperature option, or any other AGP related options?

I played with all I could find last night, but I'll list them all here when I get home.

Here's all the relevant (and some irrelevant I'm sure) settings in my Bios:

Video BIOS Shadow - Disabled (Was previously Enabled .. changed a few trying to solve problems last night)
C8000-CBFFF Shadow - Disabled
more of these .. etc - all Disabled

Advanced Chipset Features (listed all of these in case anything is of use):
Bank 0/1 DRAM Timing - SDRAM 8/10ns
Bank 2/3 DRAM Timing - SDRAM 8/10ns
Bank 4/5 DRAM Timing - SDRAM 8/10ns
DRAM Bank Interleave - 4-Way
Delay DRAM Read Latch - Auto
MD Drive Strength - Hi
SDRAM Cycle Length - 2
Memory Hole - Disabled
PCI Master Pipeline Req - Enabled
P2C/C2P Concurrency - Enabled
Fast R-W Turn Around - Enabled
System Bios Cacheable - Enabled
Video RAM Cacheable - Disabled
AGP Aperture Size - 128 (was originally 64 - also tried 256)
AGP-4X Mode - Enabled (think I also tried disabled)
AGP Driving Control - Auto (maybe I should set this manually, but don't know what to)
Fast Write Supported - Supported
CPU to PCI Write Buffer - Disabled (was Enabled)
PCI Dynamic Bursting - Disabled (was Enabled)
PCI Master 0 WS Write - Disabled (was Enabled)
PCI Delay Transaction - Disabled (was Enabled)
Delay Transaction - Disabled
PCI Master Reading Caching - Disabled
PCI #2 Access #1 Retry - Disabled (was Enabled)
AGP Master 1 WS Write - Disabled (was Enabled)
AGP Master 1 WS Read - Disabled (was Enabled)
PCI MasterBus Time-Out - 1

Excuse any mistakes. I don't know what most of this means and I've written it by hand then typed it up.

Does it offer any insight?

The only items that seem potentially relevant are:
AGP Aperture Size - 128 (was originally 64 - also tried 256)
AGP-4X Mode

the settings that you're using should be fine, so I'm not really sure what else to suggest at this point.

Could you suggest anywhere else I could ask?

Is it likely that my hardware is faulty? Or just some setting somewhere needs tweaking? Someone on the MythTV forum thinks it's a setting, but I'm loosing faith in the device its self. I'm at a loss.
