Default Nvidia Drivers Stop Working After Reboot

So when I get Ubuntu 6.10 up and running - everything is great. I can even install the latest nVidia driver 1.0-9755 w/ my eyes closed...seriously, it's that easy. So now the system is up and running and I installed the nvidia drivers using their provided shell script that compiles the kernel modules automatically but when I reboot, my machine comes up in tty1 or CLI mode. I run "startx" and it fails so I check my xorg.conf and everything looks normal.

I decide to troubleshoot and make one small change to the xorg.conf file to see if this will get X up and working and it does. I change the driver entry from "nvidia" to "vesa" and reload /etc/init.d/kdm. This now loads X with the generic vesa driver but I can't understand why it would work one moment and then one simple reboot changes everything. I did not run any single updates and or made sure there is only one single kernel loaded on this machine and its the same one I rebooted from.

So I just re-ran the nvidia shell script for their drivers and walk through the install again and it works fine. I now have functioning nvidia drivers on my machine but that all changes when I reboot.

Anyone know why? This is really confusing.

Be sure to remove and purge the nvidia related ubuntu packages before installing the nvidia.com drivers.

I had simillar problem, and I "solved" by removing any nvidia related links from /etc/rc*.d/ folders. What are these scripts? And what they are for? They seem to break the drivers...

@qrees: /etc/init.d/nvidia-glx (part of the nvidia-glx package; it is considered a configuration file and thus not removed unless the package is removed with the --purge option) statically moves NVIDIA TLS library links around.

Please also see http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=90447 (it's not clear if the problem described there, but it may help).

nonZero,
According to your bug report, X is running 1280x1024 on your CRT. I see no signs of any problems. Was this bug report generated while the problem was present?

thanks,
Lonni

Lonni,

As I wrote above, the problem is that I need to reinstall the drivers after each reboot.

Please detail all the steps that you've followed from the sticky post.

You need to generate a bug report while that problem is present.

Hi!

I have done this:
Quote:
* the nvidia-glx package has been uninstalled with the --purge option and the file /etc/init.d/nvidia-glx does not exist.
I did not do purge when I uninstalled, but I can't find any trace for glx.

I also did:
Quote:
DISABLED_MODULES="nv"
(uninstalling the restricted modules made xserver to stop launching at all till I installed them again.)

Attaching a bug report following a restart (x does not load, before reinstalling the driver).

Thanx,
nonZero
