Default Unable to compile kernel interface due to missing version.h

Hi all, I've looked at many threads here and have found nothing that has helped with this problem so am starting this thread.

I'm running Slackware 11.0 with my own compiled kernel, version 2.6.20.3. My kernel source is in /usr/src/linux-2.6.20.3 and the symlink /lib/modules/2.6.20.3/build points to ~/kernel (because when I build the kernel, I specified that directory as an output when I ran make). I'm trying to install the latest version of the drivers, 1.0-9755. The error message is as follows:

The kernel header file '/usr/src/linux/include/linux/version.h' does not exist. The most likely reason for this is that the kernel source files in '/usr/src/linux' have not been configured.

/usr/src/linux is a symlink to /usr/src/linux-2.6.20.3.

What do I need to do to fix this?

Thanks.

cd /usr/src/linux
make menuconfig (and exit immediately from it pressing 2 times ESC saving the configuration)
make modules_prepare

and then retry to install nvidia drivers

You shouldn't touch /usr/src/ and definitely not symlink it anywhere.

/usr/src/ holds the kernel headers that GLIBC was compiled with.

If you do build you own kernel, build it in your home directory (after install, nVidia will find the correct source tree). Leave /usr/src well alone.
