Default Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate Edition x64 Hard Drive activity sounds always why?

My hard drives seem to stay very busy ever since I've started using Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate Edition x64. Even if I'm surfing the web or
just doing stuff that doesn't put stress on my computer my hard drives are working away like thier in a defrag mode but I'm not defragging anything.
What do you think it could be? I never had this issue in Windows XP Pro ever. The hard drives in Windows XP Pro would only make noise when there was activity such as playing a game or running an application. The noise isn't a bad defective noise. It's the kind of sound you get when your defragging your hard drives. In my case it's when I'm using Windows Vista Ultimate x64 This is very odd......

Disabling superfetch and defender quieted mine down for me.

Thats normal on vista, its superfetch doing that. I have it on since it makes system run faster but the hdd noise pisses me off, i got the WD 150gb and the sound it outputs is so LOUD, other hhd i have are near silent.

System Protection is the number one HD killer for me. Every time I install, uninstall, or move things around it does something that uses the HD quite a bit for quite some time
