After installing it, turn off automatic updates in the scheduler. Whenever you update, you get the ad, be it manually, or automatically. If you don't leave your PC on 24/7, you'll get the update, and also the ad, whenever you boot up.

Yeah couldn't get rid of it. But I just did some more searching and found this.
Negative, see above. The registry change is "illegal" in their sense, as they see it as having the right to advertise the full version on their free version. If you don't want the ad on bootup, disable automatic updates.

Okay so basically there is no way to have it function properly and not bother me with ads. Therefore I will skip it.

There are plenty of ways to avoid that ad, you're just too stubborn to follow the advice already given in this thread.

Ah, thanks Medion. It's probably the automatic updates then.

I did notice the ad when I updated the definitions, however, and it never bothered me one bit. I've downloaded the new version from their website to make sure, and I didn't get it. My old settings must have transferred over to the new installation.

I like to have control of things like that, so I never get it when my computer reboots. I do manual updates anyway since I'm pretty cautious about downloading and running stuff I don't know about, and I don't need the bleeding edge definitions anyway.

You're getting one of the best antivirus programs for free, and to me, one click to close an ad is nothing.

This should kill the Antivir popups altogether. http://www.wikihow.com/Remove-the-Po...-Avira-Antivir

.....what are you talking about? All I see is your suggestion to disable automatic updates. Then I have a not 100% functioning antivirus. I don't want to have to manually update ever day or so. I want a program that runs in the background, automatically updates, catches viruses, and is free. Avira does not meet those requirements whereas AVG does.

Unless of course I'm missing the "plenty of ways" to disable the ad you're referring to.....

If you had kept Avira, I'd suggest that you edit the time when it automatically updates. Since the ad automatically closes itself in either 30 or 60 seconds (I forget which), having it update at some hour when you're generally not at your PC means you'll almost never see the ad. However, if you're more energy conscious and only have your PC on when you use it, then yes, you'll see the ad almost every time that you boot up.

As for not turning off auto updates due to having a non-working AV program, I don't see why that's even a concern with you. I mean, you've said yourself, you don't mind using AVG, a program with barely more than half the detection rate of viruses than Avira. To me, that's a non-working AV program, and it consumes more resources as well.

I appreciate what you're saying and see that AVG isn't the best choice of antivirus. But the fact remains that I've had AVG for over 4 years and never had a virus problem (ie a virus that got through AVG and fubar'd my system). After installing Avira I did a full scan of my system (took a good 3 hours) and it didn't find a single thing. To me this shows that AVG is doing fine. The only time I have EVER gotten a virus (but AVG caught it) is from *cough**cough* keygens for certain applications *cough**cough* . And AVG caught those.

And I do only turn on my computer when I need it so scheduling the update for a different time would be difficult.

Maybe sometime in the future I will give Avira another chance, just right now I've been put off by stupid popup ads (seems silly really....)

NP, we use what works for us. Honestly, no AV program will protect a user from bad browsing habits, and neither you nor I seem to have those. Over the course of my life, I've only ever had one incident with viruses. I plugged my thumbdrive into a military laptop. When I brought it home and plugged it in, Avira popped up and nuked 4 viruses on the drive.

I like to manually update my definitions. About once a week on average, I update Defender, Spybot, and Avira. About once a month, I scan and defrag. It's a routine that works for me, and since I do it out of habit, I don't need auto updates. I just don't want programs doing something in the background when I might be playing a game.

Just gone from BitDefender 2008 Security Suite to Avira Antivir. Seems very good so far. Not too happy using Vista's firewall though... any ideas for a good, cheap/free firewall anyone?

Honestly, I'm not a fan of software firewalls, but I'm no expert on them either. I feel that a hardware firewall (router), and proper browsing habits are all you need. Hopefully someone in here can chime in with a good firewall solution for you.
