Default Nvidia quadro4 980XGL corrupted graphics with rendering

If I start for example glxgears I get pixelgroups thrown over the screen and the machine hangs up. Extremely irritating...

I have now tried Ubuntu Feisty and Downgraded to Ubuntu Edgy. I have now additionally problem with my Eizo screen that does not get recognized on all modes. (I tried another screen too and the pixel problem is there)

When I use IgnoreEDID option I get the native 1600x1200 but all my own modeline trials are ignored - the message in Xorg.0.log is:

(--) NVIDIA(0): Interlaced video modes are supported on this GPU
(--) NVIDIA(0): Connected display device(s) on Quadro4 980 XGL at PCI:1:0:0:

(WW) NVIDIA(0): UBB is incompatible with the Composite extension. Disabling
(WW) NVIDIA(0): UBB.
(--) Depth 24 pixmap format is 32 bpp

Otherwise I have tried pretty damn near all - I tried 9631 drivers of feisty, downgraded to 9629 and so on. Tried even 8776 on Feisty with a patch that I found here.

Now I am down to Edgy and 8677 but the pixel problem is still there.

Here are relevant bits of my xorg.conf:

I don't know - why modelines get ignored and I only get 1600x1200 out of it.
That is not a problem if I get the damn thing to run without this pixel corruption crappola...

my dad has a Quadro4 900 XGL and he was getting all sorts of corruption, (windows though) like if he dragged a window around (like shaking it) it would just continously get more and more corrupted until the window was resized. I replaced the vid card with a geforce 6600 gt.

I downgraded to Ubuntu Edgy. Now it seems a bit more positive. I had all kinds of problems even with nvidia-glx. I finally installed 1.8776 manually directly from nvidia (I don't understand since the package nvidia-glx is the same). Now glxgears does not barf the pixels around the screen.

Also for my Eizo screen I needed all IgnoreEDID variants (the simple IgnoreEDID does not work anymore). IgnoreValidModes and IgnoreFrequency or whatever. Then I gradually became a master of my resolutions and I can now manually define modelines.

HOWEVER, I am totally tied to 8776, anything higher than that and it won't work 8629 gives core dump on glxinfo 8631 throws pixels all around the screen and crashes the machine. I can't downgrade to 8774 or whatever downwards - the kernel module won't compile and so on.

I am wondering what kernel and what xorg would be the best combination for Quadro4 or what I should try? some 7xxxx does not seem to compile - is there some compability matrix? I am, however, not sure I can downgrade kernel in Edgy? (and if that solves a damn thing - Feisty, for example would not run 8776 with 2.6.20 kernel without tricks...patching the nvidia driver)

The 8776 is working now but the CAD applications I want to use have some minor issues - it is always like this if you don't use RedHat or SuSe but I have no interest to install one of them and then and suffer on other fronts.

I am wondering if I could do something better in xorg.conf to get rid of the rest of my probs...

In case you were curious here is what my dads 900XGL was doing (it also does it in linux so I have verified it is a bad card)

The fact that I was doing AIGLX + beryl I think made the problem worse:
