Talking Re: 1080i Resolution unused by nvidia-auto-select on 60-inch HDTV, [ Sony KDS-R60XBR1

Aaron: I'm back from the morgue, here's the victim's remains (attached). It's apparent with only the top half of the full screen showing, (and nvidia-settings) that the card is delivering 1920x540.

Permit me to revisit this section of xorg.0.log from earlier:
Code:
(II) NVIDIA(0): --- Building ModePool for SONY TV (DFP-0) ---
(II) NVIDIA(0): Validating Mode "1920x1080":
(II) NVIDIA(0): 1920 x 540 @ 60 Hz *** what's this about?
(II) NVIDIA(0): Mode Source: EDID
Rerush, YGM dude. That was my first thought regarding the refresh rate.

I can't resist mentioning my success with ATI.

Configuration has been unchanged since the last post.

Thanks Aaron. Sorry it's a bug but at least I won't have to wrack my brain on it anymore.
You're safe with me. I don't have an ATI card to plug in so I'll wait.

New driver out next week, right?
Am I asking too much? How about a tiny little patch to hold us over?

Thanks again for addressing the problem.

If its any help (or consolation ?) I think I ran into the same bug/issue last night. My setup is at home (no internet) but here's what I recall off the top of my head :

Sony KV-34XBR970 (34" directview CRT, 16:9, 1080i native)
AMD64 X2 1.9 GHz Brisbane core
ASUS M2NPV-VM (onboard NVidia 6150)
DVI-HDMI cable

First I learned about logverbose 6 and the no vertical refresh check, and that helped (HD modes no longer rejected). The vert refresh rate I was getting was also 120.1

Then I tried 1920x1080 and it looked good, but the screen was twice as tall as the TV screen : i.e. only the top half of the desktop was visible, the lower half was "below" the bottom edge of the TV.

For now, I switched to 720p which works okay, but I'd sure love to get 1080i working. If it helps I can get my logfile and xorg.conf via sneakernet, but it will be a day or two.

Hey man,

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only person with this sort of problem, symptoms appear similar. Really like to take a look at your xorg.conf and xorg logfile, you might be okay after all and it might be something else.

Take a camera with you as well, as funny as it sounds nobody would believe I was seeing only 1920 x 540.

I have the same problem as well. There is a workaround (I stress that this is a *workaround*). Read this entire thread. Especially page 2.

There are other issues with 1080i (that at least some people have had). Please see here.

"There is a workaround (I stress that this is a *workaround*)."

I tried modelines a month or so ago with no luck. Used PowerStrip (in Windows) to generate display identical to what NV Control Panel would do. Nice thing is that PowerStrip will print out a modeline for the timing. Take that over to Linux.

Could not get it going though. Same timings that worked beautifully in WinXP bombed in Linux (FC6). I know I tried in TV-out mode. Note that NV docs say custom modelines are ignored so I was not surprized that it didn't work. Don't recall if I tried DVI out.

The "workaround" referenced goes back to last year when (and in earlier years) modelines were pretty much the only way to get TV display. As I mentioned in an earlier post S-video out with 3-way splitter to component works with proper xorg.conf setup. I got nice 1080i. But needed overscan option to bring display into frame and option did not wotk. Go figure.

Does anyone have custom modelines working with current hardware/drivers/distros? If so please post.

Perhaps Nvidia will comment on this. Are custom modelines supported through DVI?

Yes, I do. Which is why I posted the link to the workaround. This is over DVI. If you read the link I gave the problem (1920x540 display) *only* manifests itself with DVI when trying to display 1080i. I'm using the 9755 driver (and I've also tried the most recent beta driver: 100.14.03). Card is 6200. I'm running Ubuntu Gutsy.

When you say you 'tried custom modelines' did you actually try what was suggested in the link I gave?
