Default GeForce FX 5500 and Apple 23" Cinema Display

Four straight days working on this, searching this and other forums, and still no luck getting my Apple 23" Cinema Display to work on my AMD64 / GeForce FX550 / Ubuntu setup. My 17" CRT connected to the VGA port works fine. Nothing happening when I connect the Apple to the DVI port. Hopefully someone here can shed some light. I have attached my nvidia-bug-report.log. Please help!

I wouldn't expect it to work if you're disabling the EDID. If this problem persists with 1.0-9755, please start X with the following command:
startx -- -logverbose 6

and then generate a new bug report.

thanks,
Lonni

Is there anything special I need to do in order to upgrade to the 9755 driver (ie uninstall the 8776 driver)? If so, is there a step by step tutorial on upgrading?

All that you need to do is install 1.0-9755.

Your graphics card does not have the dual link TMDS support required for the 1920x1200 mode:
(--) NVIDIA(0): Apple Cinema HD (DFP-0): 135.0 MHz maximum pixel clock
(--) NVIDIA(0): Apple Cinema HD (DFP-0): Internal Single Link TMDS

This is a hardware limitation.

Doh! Should it not fall back to a lower resolution (1280x800)?

Normally, sure, however there's only one native mode in the EDID of the display, so there's nothing to fall back to.

Thanks for the help. I am glad I finally at least know the problem. What would be a good card to get that would support the dual link TDMS? I was looking at the GeForce 7600 GT...

You can probably get it to work using:
Option "ModeValidation" "NoMaxPClkCheck"

When this causes problems (e.g. bad pixels) you can try creating a modeline for a lower vertical refresh rate. This worked for my Dell display but I don't know if it works on the Apple.

Well, that gave me something. Now I can see the general beige background color of the splash login page, but nothing is rendering other than that general color. I also see some vertical colored lines in the right hand side of the display. And the entire display comes and goes (ie it fades in and out). It looks like the 1920x1200 mode is being validated. Is there anything I can try beyond this? Latest bug report attached.

I see something or someone has put a couple of ModeLines in your Monitor section in xorg.conf
Try removing these. The EDID modeline returned from the display probably has a lower clock (154 MHz) that may be in reach for your card.

The modeline will be something like this:
ModeLine "1920x1200" 154.00 1920 1968 2000 2080 1200 1203 1209 1235 +hsync -vsync

You can also try pasting this into your xorg.conf

When that still does not work, try lowering the number 154.00 a bit. This will lower the refreshrate as well, which your display may or may not support.
