Unhappy X works, but videos only show black (with sound)

I was able to successfully install 9755 without any problems on ubuntu feisty with a geforce 7300 GS. I can start and run x, and run applications under x with no problem.

However, if I try to play video, all I get is a black screen but I still hear sound. I'm stuck as I have no clue how to fix this. I haven't been able to track down any solutions either.

Any ideas?

BTW - I'm trying playback in mythtv, which I've used for a while, but I just built a new frontend with this new video card.

I'm having the same problem, but it's intermittent.

(Using gentoo with 9755)

If I disable AGP (Option "NvAGP" "0" in xorg.conf) the behavior goes away.

The only lines I see in the log file that look out of place are:
Quote:
(WW) NVIDIA(0): The NVIDIA X driver has encountered too many errors. Falling
(WW) NVIDIA(0): back to legacy PCI mode.
I can't find any of the errors that are triggering this message, even when I use -logverbose 9.

Also, if I use "mplayer -vo xv" to play a video I sometimes get a blank mplayer window.

I can minimize the effects while using mythtv with the hidden UseXvMCForHDOnly option, but that doesn't help with HD content.

If disabling AGP (with NvAGP=0) eliminates the problem then this is likely an AGP driver bug or a hardware problem. Either way, its not an nvidia driver bug. Have you tried any of the other values for NvAGP or reducing the AGP rate?

I can't try this until I get home this evening, but my card is a PCI-E card. Do non-AGP cards use NvAGP? I have not set anything specific in my xorg.conf related to NvAGP.

I'm not sure this is my problem. Like I said, everything works EXCEPT video. I'm not sure how this could be anything but a driver problem? I just don't know how to troubleshoot this issue. I spent 2 days trying to fix this with no success.

I also should add that I've tried 3 versions of the driver (one older and the newest 100.X version) as well as the ubuntu packages, all with no sucess. Right now I've reverted back and I am running the binary 100.x version. Same results, everything works except video rendering.

Also, just to let you know that if I try XvMC -I get a really really bad picture. It has vertical lines and lacks color and is scalled incorrectly.

Do you have any ideas on what I could do to provide more feedback to you guys that may be more useful? I can upload a bug-report when I get home if you think that may help. This is a huge problem that I have to resolve somehow and really am asking for any help I can get. Thank you ahead of time!

See: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=46678

However, only AGP hardware is impacted by the NvAGP driver option.

Thanks netllama - I'll upload the bug report tonight (ran one yesterday, just didn't attach it) and I'll also provide some additional information from the playback logs so you can see what the player is attempting to do to see where the problem might exist. Hopefully you and some other folks can at least review that information and point towards some root-cause.

Thanks!

netllama (and all)

I've attached my nvidia-but-report as well as some logs from the player (mythtv) to see if we can't nail down the root cause of this and see if there's a problem with the driver somewhere or not.

Does this problem persist if you're not using the Composite extension in X?

Yes it does... I added this to the end of my xorg.conf file:

Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Disable"
EndSection

and my xorg log no longer contains this line
Quote:
(II) NVIDIA(0): Support for GLX with the Damage and Composite X extensions is
(II) NVIDIA(0): enabled.
So I assume I disabled it properly.

Specifically what are you using to play these videos? Have you tried anything else?
