Default GLX crashing with nvidia binaries on slackware-current

Hi,

on slackware-current after installing nvidia-linux-x86-1.0-9755 any app linked to libGL is crashing with a memory access error. Xorg.0.log shows that the nvidia driver and nvidia glx was loaded. All symlinks point to the nvidia libraries and there are no stale symlinks or old nvidia libs on the system. Running ldd shows that all the correct libraries are linked. X is running, but any app linked to libGL crashes. Strange is that running glx applications as root works!
The problem appears also with other versions of the driver.

System:
Kernel 2.6.20
FX 5200
Slackware-current
X 7.1.99
Mesa-6.5.2

Any pointers are welcome.

TIA

If I'm understanding correctly, you're stating that this problem only occurs for non-root users?

What is the output from the following command?
ls -l /dev/nvidia*

Also, what is the exact error that you're getting, and which applications trigger the crash?

Thank you for your response. Here is the requested information:

Permisisons:

crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 195, 0 21. Nov 2005 /dev/nvidia0
crw-rw---- 1 root video 195, 1 21. Nov 2005 /dev/nvidia1
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 195, 255 21. Nov 2005 /dev/nvidiactl

I am in group viideo, but I tried to change the permissions on /dev/nvidia1 anyway w/o success.

Any app linked with libGL.so.1 crashes with "Speicherzugriffsfehler", means "Memory access error" and noting else. Naturally this includes kdeinit, kcminit etc., but also glxinfo, any OpenGL screensaver and so one.

HTH

Something looks to be wrong in the /dev/nvidia* device ownership on your system. /dev/nvidia0 should not be entirely owned by root. I'm not that familiar with Slackware, however, I'd guess that /dev/nvidia0 should be owned by your user when that user is logged into X.

Something is misconfigured on your system (or perhaps this is a Slackware bug), however I don't believe that this is a driver bug, as I've not had anyone else report this (especially a Slackware user).

Hm, it's world read/writable, but I 'll look into that.

I guess you're right, something is borked on my system, but since I'm running out of ideas, I thought I give it a try.

Thank you for your help.

For comparison, I am running Slackware 10 ~ heavy updated from source code etc. over time. Here is my output of 'ls -l /dev/nvidia*' running as normal user.

nick@linuxamd:nick$ ls -l /dev/nvidia*
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 195, 0 2005-04-17 13:26 /dev/nvidia0
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 195, 1 2005-04-17 13:26 /dev/nvidia1

Solved! The problem was caused by the permissions on /usr/lib/tls. After changing them from 700 to 755 everything works fine. Thanks to all who tried to help.
