Unhappy No XVMC with 8500 and 100.14.03 Beta

Hi, all-

I just purchased a brand new Gigabyte GeForce 8500GT for my home theatre PC. It didn't work under FC6 Linux with the 9755 drivers I had installed, so I was pleased to hear of the 100.14.03 Beta driver's release.

I installed the beta, and while things worked much better than with the "vesa" driver I had been using, XVMC doesn't seem to be available.

It looks good in the Xorg.0.log file:
<snip>
(II) Loading extension XVideo
(II) Loading extension XVideo-MotionCompensation
<snip>

But doesn't work with mythtv or mplayer (Here's the mplayer output):
mplayer -vo xvmc -vc ffmpeg12mc dvd://

<snip>
VIDEO: MPEG2 720x480 (aspect 3) 29.970 fps 7500.0 kbps (937.5 kbyte/s)
vo_xvmc: X-Video extension 2.2
vo_xvmc: No X-Video MotionCompensation Extension on :0.0
Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device.
<snip>

The problem is specific to the 8500GT; I put my old 6800 nvidia card back in and xvmc worked again.

Unfortunately, I need xvmc for hdtv playback in mythtv, so it would be great if this got fixed..

Unhappy Re: No XVMC with 8500 and 100.14.03 Beta

I filed a bug report on this with nvidia, and received the following email back...

Hi Max,

Thanks for writing. Currently, XVMC is not supported on the 8500GT.
For the time being, the older 6800 card that you have will need to be
used for XVMC support.

Thanks,

Ken Spencer
NVIDIA Corporation

This is pretty disappointing. It looked like the fanless gigabyte 8500gt was the perfect card for an inexpensive linux based home theater pc, but if they don't fix XVMC it is way less attractive.

I'm still getting reasonable performance without XVMC with a dual core pentium D 805, but 1080i HDTV content seems to have some issues.

I looked at the various supported card appendix pages, and don't see the new cards listed.

It would be useful to get the Device PCI ID numbers and Card versions for the cards that currently do not support xvmc.

That's: lspci -nn | grep VGA
if anyone cares to add to this information for users and others who might benefit from having this information.

It would also be nice to have information like this documented somewhere in an appendix so nVidia support can point to it.

There is currently no XVMC support for G8x based cards.

Thanks for that information, now if we can get the Device PCI ID numbers for those cards that would be useful information as well, or if the main card appendix page can be updated with the new card information that would be even better:

http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree8...ppendix-a.html
currently only lists two 8800 cards, and no other cards from the 8xxx series, unless I missed them.

By the way, even though this page is slightly incomplete, I want to thank nvidia for at least making an effort to present the required data, unlike ATI, which currently seems to have lost all interest in putting out any effort at all for Linux users, including even basic support (no ATI driver currently is working with the new xorg 1.3 syntax). Needless to say we are now pushing all users to never buy ATI again.

Exclamation Don't hold your breath for XVMC on nvidia 8500, 8600, or 8800

I emailed back to Ken Spencer at nvidia, asking if the lack of XVMC was due to hardware differences on the 8x00 series, and got a "Yes" answer back. Nvidia says they have no plans to provide XVMC on any of these cards:

Hi Max,

I am glad to hear that your 8500GT is working well for you with the
exception of XVMC support in Linux. This is a hardware limitation that
involves all 8000 series graphics cards. There are no definite plans at
this time to provide XVMC support for the 8000 series graphics cards.

Thank you,

Ken Spencer
NVIDIA Corporation

Make sure you have a powerful processor if you want to view Hi-Def content with one of these cards under Linux. As I stated earlier, the Pentium D 805 seems to pretty much work for HDTV (I use a seperate backend for mythtv).

What? Is this a joke? You're saying that if someone is buying 8800 ultra(or any 8xxx card) for a lot of money ,he isnt getting XVMC. I have always like Nvidia ,but last actions with 8500 and 8600 castrated so much , crazy price of 8800 ultra and now that. Tell me you're kidding .

****, that sounds like they dont even plan HDCP support either... holy crap. That letter is a shock for the Linux world right now! They released HW with no planning to support it... that sounds like they are pushing multimedia users to Intel's direction. Pretty lame to hear it from a company like Nvidia. I'm looking forward someone from Nvidia to clear this serious content up...

It looks Geforce 8 is pure 3D only so 2D parts (video, 2D) are cut. Linux and Windows desktops are going to be 3D so these former 2D like accelerations are obsolete. Xv is probably done in pixel shader technology that is why it is available.

And what about the HW decoding part? The point here is using less processor, not just displaying something. Correct me if i'm wrong.

Thunderbird suggested (in other XvMC thread) video acceleration using higher version of pixel shaders. This is theory. I do not know is it possible in real life.
If it would be possible Nvidia developers could provide XvMC for Geforce 8 already.

Anyway, I feel disturbance in the Force here...two posts:

@netllama: "There is currently no XVMC support for G8x based cards."
@support mail:
"There are no definite plans at this time to provide XVMC support for the 8000 series graphics cards."

So this is low priority for a "long-long" time. You bought your brand new card with big marketing accentuated on HDCP/HW decoding, and now finally you can say bye-bye to HW accelerated mpeg2 you got in your older card. Pretty sure the budget is cut down on desktop linux as always workstation linux is the priority. All right, got used to it. You can say now 8XXX is not for multimedia but gaming under Linux, if noone assures another priority here.
