Default 16 pipe 6800 ok for current-gen @ 1366x768?

I sold my 939 rig 1.5yrs ago, and have been suffering with a socketA/FX5700 rig since then...

I used to have a Gainward 12 pipe nv40 with so-so OC-ability. Good card, but it lacked punch at times...

Well, I'm building a budget rig real soon to get myself back into the fun of pc gaming.

I'll be using a 26" HD set with a 1366x768 rez, and I don't care to use much more than 2xaa and some decent af... So I don't have very high requirements...

Whaddya think, can a 16 pipe nv40 still handle current-gen games @ this resolution and IQ?

If I wanna play GOW PC on my rig (in DX9c compatibility mode, lol) should I take a further step up?

I'll only use this rig for a year... after which I'll be going high-end.

It should be ok if you dont go further than 2xAA &/or 4xAF (Quality).

on a side note i'm surprised how you can afford a 26" HD & yet you can't get a decent video card. say a 7800GTX

26 HDTVs are really cheap now

about 400-500 bucks and less if you get a good deal

I gotta put the HD set in front of the pc on the priority list, and that leaves me requiring a budget setup... hell, a 26" hd set is "budget", too...

Basically I'm building a cheap/legal XP SP2 media center-ish setup, and I'd like to give it some decent gaming power.

IIRC a 7900GS just barely ekes out victories over a 6800U, right?

/runs off to check out some reviews...

also of note: does nv4x still have video playback acceleration issues? I won't be playing much full HD content, but I certainly would like functional acceleration if it's there...

The 7900GS is better than a 6800U without a doubt. it has 20 pixel pipes & faster memory.

My friend who has a 6800U mobile does seem to have HD issues. i'm not sure if they were drivers related.

arright... I guess I'll only get an NV4X if I HAVE to... time to consider the G series, somewhere between 7600gs and 7900gs...

Just remember that 7600GT is faster than a GS, so if your looking 7600 it is worthwhile to go GT.

Good to hear from ya saz...

I'm doing ok, really busy with website/marketing development for the software company i'm working for. Web2.0 w00t!!

And to fully confess, I suppose I'm "egged-on" with regards to nv4x because newegg still has some 6800's left for $100 that are mostly showing up on people's doorsteps as 16 pipers...

$100 for 256mb, 256 bit mem interface isn't too dang bad of a deal IMO. Coupled with a 939 cpu around 250htt/2.5ghz and 1.5gb ram, that should suffice as a budget rig for 1366x768 gaming...

I'm well aware of this, thx for the headsup anyway tho...

I always tend to like the non-gt cards though for some reason.. gives me a reason to push 'em.

case in point: my old leadtek 6200, i unlocked it and oc'ed the crap out of it, and it was neck and neck with 6600gt's for a lot less dough...

I'm going to have to say this is cutting it close, performance-wise. However, since you are using AGP, you really don't have a better choice @ $100 than a 6800, other than not buying anything.

It depends on the game, but you are probably not going to be able to use AA, and might have to reduce details from high to low/medium.

I've used a DDR3 7300GT clocked at 600/1500. This performs about as well as a 16-pipe, DDR3, 6800. A 16-pipe, DDR1 6800 will perform about as well as a 7600GS.

If you want to play GOW PC, then yeah, I would take a step up. For Rainbow Six: Vegas (UE 3.0 game), the maximum playable resolution on DDR3 7300GT was 800x600.

Regarding 6-series vs 7-series, you should note that the latter is considerably more efficient and performs better in shader-intensive applications. Newer games are going to reveal the difference.
