Default when to upgrade your driver

I run Gentoo and whenever a new nVidia driver comes out, I let it upgrade.

Should I be? Do I get better performance with new drivers? Or are they just to support newer hardware?

I have a BFG 7600 GT OC.

Currently I am running drivers 1.0.9755. Should I stop there?

Thx

maybe look at www.phoronix.com for tests and easier decisions. they usually test new drivers' performance.
