Let me check on another computer right quick- I don't have XP on my rig anymore...

Okay.

Right click on "My Computer" --> Select "Properties" --> click on the "Advanced" tab --> towards the bottom you'll see a box that says "Startup and Recover", click the "Settings" button --> From the pull down menu select the default OS of choice, and uncheck the box where it asks how long to display the list of OS's.

That should do it.

How many drives do you have?

I would have XP installed first and then install vista on a new drive. This will give you the easiest boot options. Vista option will say vista, XP option will say "older version of windows" and they will be available seamlessly.

He didn't want to OS selection menu to appear, as such that would not be an option he'd want to take.

Unless I misunderstood what he said in the OP.
