Default Nvidia Crashing With Fedora 7 User Switching

Greetings, I've been having a problem with the Nvidia driver and X sessions crashing since upgrading to Fedora 7. I posted to fedoraforum and a reply suggested I might also try here. Below is the original post:

For years my wife and I have relied on running separate concurrent X sessions to keep our desktop settings / files / preferences separate. Normally we'd start the second session with "Applications > System Tools > New Login", then switch back and forth depending on who was using the computer with Alt+F7/F8/etc.

With the inclusion of the user switching functionality in Fedora 7 (and using Nvidia's driver, I cannot replicate the problem using the nv driver), this now tends to crash more often than it works.

Steps to reproduce:

- Login as user A.
- Spawn new session for user B. (either with the New Login menu entry mentioned above, or using the user switcher GNOME applet)
- Switch back to user A's desktop. (using the GNOME applet or Alt + F7)

At this point the crash is intermittent, but very common. The original X session disappears, I briefly see the console and then gdm is restarted, this time visible on Alt+F10. User B's desktop continues running on Alt+F9, but User A's has died.

I get the following backtrace in my logs:

Backtrace:
0: /usr/bin/Xorg(xf86SigHandler+0x6d) [0x47f5ed]

I filed a bug with Fedora on the issue before I realized the problem was only occurring with the binary Nvidia driver. Sadly I realize that this is not supported by the official Fedora community precisely because the driver is binary and thus, will be very difficult to support. As such I'm scouring the community for anyone who might have encountered a similar problem or might have the know how to fix the issue, or even work around.

If it helps I've used multiple X sessions and the Nvidia driver for several years on a number of distributions, this is the first time I've encountered a problem and thus I'm afraid it's something resulting from the Fedora 7 user switching changes.

I'm also running x86_64 and normally use Livna's Nvidia packages, but have tried manually installing Nvidia drivers to no avail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Its not entirely clear, but it sounds like you're trying to run two simultaneous X servers. Is this correct?

The NVIDIA driver only supports one X server per GPU.

Assuming I answered your first question correctly, is this a recent change to policy/functionality for the nvidia driver, or just the long standing official stance. (as mentioned above it's something I've been using for several years without issue, but perhaps that was just by chance)

This has been the official policy for a long time, I'm afraid that you've been lucky if its worked in the past.

I have a friend encountering a similar problem when switching to the console and then returning to X. (only one X session) Will see if I can replicate the error in this situation and the stack trace is the same and respond here if so.

Hi Dragoran, wondering if you're running Fedora 7?

I see this too, but it doesn't always have to be two X servers - I could be switching to VT1 and back to Xorg for example.

Wasn't there a similar bug with switching from VT to X session about a year or two ago? It's been so long I can't remember, but I seem to recall having a problem back when I still had my geForce 4.

Edit: Some googling suggests what I'm remembering was in XF86 and not Xorg, but similar.

Confirmed, this is not a problem with multiple X sessions but a problem with switching VT's. I have replicated the same stack trace switching to the console with Ctrl+Alt+F1 and then back to X with Alt+F7.
