Default performence issues with ut2004

Hello all!

I have a GeForce 7600GT and driver version 1.0-9755, and AGP4x.

My problem is that when I play UT2004 the game hangs for a few seconds, and then runs, and then hangs for a few seconds, and then runs smooth... It runs smooth for maybe a minute, a minute and a half between hangs...

I find this strange because it does this even on 800x600 and my old GeFOrce4 4600 managed to play this game smooth, wich was AGP as well...

The card has 256MB on it.
My cpu is a p4 2.2GHz and 512MB RAM...

I also has 2 seperate Xscreens running

Not sure if this helps: once apon a time it was necessary to
change VARSize in the .ut2004/System/UT2004.ini to 0 to
avoid this hick-up effect for PCIe (!) cards. Since you have an
AGP card this probably won't help. Also, this doesn't seem to
be necessary any more even for PCIe cards. But you may
nevertheless try if it has any influence :-)

regards

Bernhard

maybe your cpu is overheating and throttling?

or you could try Ingo Molnar's cfs scheduler - if you are not scared about patching and compiling a kernel.

I'm running openSUSE 10.2 with the 1.0-9631 driver... no hiccups at all (just a reference point to try). I also have a 7600GT.

BUT... I just have one monitor.

Thanks for the answeres!
Have been away for a while.

Well, no im not really afraid of compiling a kernel, althou this is the first time in a while im not running a vanilla kernel, and I have bad memories from past experiences with fiddlig with distro-costumized kernels

Maybe overheating, its worth a check, I can always have nvidia-settings on the other monitor, and watch the temp while playing

Maybe some process in background requires lot of processing power from time to time, worth to check it.

Okey, done some testing
Core temperature is constant at 49-50 Celsius, but when the game hangs, the ut2004-bin process spikes the cpu at 95-100%...

maybe some scheduling option in kernel or something?

dont know about the scheduling stuff, cus I have now tested to renice the game process to -5 and -8 during the game, and it still has these hickups... the first after ca2 min then every 1min circa...

maybe it is not enough with 512MB RAM? or 2.2GHz P4?

Well, doesnt _seem_ to be RAM issue either, I played the game using fluxbox instead of KDE, but same, same....

Do you get any XID error messages?
Open up a terminal and issue:
Code:
#sudo tail -f /var/log/messages
now minimize this terminal an launch the game. After some playing and past some hitches, quit game an look at terminal.

Im going to sum up my problems here, because its getting kinda spread out.

I have P4 2.2Ghz processor (no HT), 512MB RAM, and a GeForce 7600GT AGP card, and Im using driver version: 1.0-9755.
Kernel 2.6.18-686(provided by debian, not self compiled vanilla kernel)
When I play UT2004 I get these annoying hickups, the game freezes for a few seconds, maybe 10-15, every 1-2 minutes...

I have tried a couple of things that where sugested. I checked for XID errors, but got none. I tried fluxbox insted of KDE, but no luck... I reniced the ut2004-bin process to -5 and -8 while playing, but that doesnt help either... The core temperature is constant at 49-50 degrees celsius...

So what should I do? Try a newer(beta) driver?
Try the CFS scheduling patch? maybe, but Im not that familiar with the "debian way" of compiling kernels :/ (I like the vanilla Slackware style)

any ideas?
