Default TV-OUT is Black & White

Hi, I got an FX5700LE last month (Manufacturer: Chiefmax). It seems to work well with 1.0-9755 driver, except that the TV-OUT, in S-Video, is in Black & White. I have added the appropriate lines to xorg.conf , to make sure the signal is S-Video rather than composite, but to no avail. Also checked the saturation and hue sliders in the gui configuration tool.

Can it be the cable? (luminance pin is broken, or some such)

Is it more likely the hardware (bad card)?

Could someone please report to say their TV-OUT is OK, with full color? Is my case more of an exception or the rule?

This is on a Fedora Core 4, kernel 2.6.17

Thanks!

signals not going through maybe? I had the same problem with my old TV, had to fix an SVIDEO - SCART converter based on this page:

You're not the first and not the last with similar problem. Searching the forum will reveal some details.

Note that this "solution" just means you are converting your S-Video to Composite in a crude way. In this case you can just as well use Composite.

When the S-Video to SCART converter does not work as original, you either have a TV without S-Video support or it is not enabled.

Check the manual to find if S-Video is only possible on one of the SCART inputs (usually one input supports RGB and another supports S-Video).
Also check if you should configure S-Video input support in a TV menu somewhere.

And remove that silly pin20-pin15 jumper! The guy who wrote that article is clueless.

You might say he is clueless, but only theoretically. Practically it was the only solution for me, so I don't really care how it works. It worked for me. For some more advanced TV you may have other solutions - for my config I have not.

In such a case you should use the "composite" mode with a yellow-cinch cable. The S-Video cable will maybe work too (when the card outputs composite on the Y output as well).

Just shorting the S-Video Y and C signals is not a very good thing to do.

There is also a chance that the TV has SCART RGB support. In such a case it is by far the best to use a VGA-to-SCART conversion box (schematics can be found on the web). This converts H and V sync to composite sync for SCART, and uses the VGA RGB signals directly. The picture will be vastly superior to what you get via TV-out, because you bypass all the PAL processing this way.

Try to switch your TV to AV S-video mode.
I have Grunding TV set. When I plugged S-Video first time got BW screen too.
I use S-Video <--> S-Video cable and got BW signal too.

The fix was easy. To have colour S-Video I had to set TV Set to AV3-S mode.
It is crazy to play with AV settings for Scart connector to have colour screen on separate S-Video connector.

explanation: In some cheap TV sets the separate S-Video connector is connected to Scart connector inside TV set. That is why you have to set S-Video mode for Scart to have colour screen using S-Video connector.

If you use S-Video<-->Scart cable make sure your Scart is set to AV-SVideo mode. In my TV set I have two modes:
RGB - BW screen on TV when S-Video is connected
SVideo mode - colour screen on TV set when S-Video connected.

Hi, Thanks for so many responses

In order to rule out faulty hardware, I ordered a new, identical card from the same vendor (3btech), who actually suggested this themselves.

Should arrive early this week. If it's not the card, i'll be pursuing suggested strategies in the replies. Will report back on the results.

Thanks
Andrew

Wink Re: TV-OUT is Black & White

Well, what'yaknow!

Here are my strange results:

My new, identical hardware came in the mail, and I tested it in a different system than the one I posted about. It worked as it should, giving me TV-OUT full color.

Next, I replaced the original "B&W" card with the new one, and I got full color in the original system as well! This without changing the software, and using the same exact cable and tv set.

Here is the strange part, however: I installed the 1st ("B&W") card in the other system (Fedora, kernel 2.6.18-1.2798), and it, too, gave me full color! Except that I used an S-VIDEO-to-RCA adapter, with a different television set (haven't tried straight S-VIDEO, for lack of resources). Go figure...

If anyone has theories/explanations, perhaps even diagnostic strategies, I would be curious to know...

Thanks again for the suggestions.

Andrew
