Default I need help with HD playback (6600GT)!

I've been running into a wall trying to get HD to playback smoothly on my system. I currently have two major issues:

1. Tearing. During horizontal panning the top an bottom half of the image shift briefly.
2. Macro-blocking? I'm experiencing this on OTA HD and QAM HD via cable. During fast motion the image will break up momentarily. I've seen this on numerous channels (1080i and 720p). I don't think it's a signal strength issue because I'm not seeing it windows and it's happening with HD cable as well.

Here are my system specs:

Athlon64 3500+
6600GT (AGP)
2GB dual channel RAM
nVidia 9755 driver (same issue with beta 100.xx beta driver)
Avermedia A180 ATSC\QAM card
Olevia 532H HDTV connected via DVI

I'm hoping that fellow 6600GT owner will share their optional nvidia-settings/xorg.conf settings to achieve the best playback possible. I feel like I've tried every possible combination that can be found on these threads.

I have a dual boot XP and Kubuntu 7.04 system and playback is smooth in windows. I'm not sure if this is due to the PureVideo decoder or not. I'm primarly using Xine for playback since I'm running LinuxMCE.

I'm been using the MPEG test video from this link to test out various settings.

Have you tested with the xvmc output? Search for it on these forums or google it.

Have you tried sync to vBlank? in xine you may want to use the xxmc(not xvmc) driver. xxmc uses xvmc if possible and falls back to Xv. another thing to check is your refresh rate. Your system is higher grade system than mine and I'm able to watch HDTV with a 6600 at 1080i & 720p.

O.K, so the problem isn't with HD only. I'm seeing the same issue playing back standard def MPEG2 files as well.

Here's what I get when I try the following:

xine -V xvmc standard_def.mpg -> CPU utilization is under 20%. The screen flashes black approximately every 500ms. It's completely unwatchable.

xine -V xxmc standard_def.mpg -> Same as when using xvmc

xine -V Xv standard_def.mpg -> CPU utilization is around 25%. The playback is much better than xvmc. The screen doesn't flash black, but it's still jittery and I can see tearing in multiple places every few seconds.

It doesn't seem to make a difference if I check Sync to VBlank in the OpenGL section of the nVidia-settings application. I'm running at 60hz.

I've attached the nvidia bug report.

There is also a "X Server XVideo Settings" menu with sync to vblank options

I tried checking those as well and it doesn't make a difference.

I read on the freevo users forum that ubuntu edgy had a problem to the xserver.
the guy was using 7.1.1. he found a post on the ubuntu forums talking about tearing on LCD displays being caused by non-conforming viertical refresh. Which got him thinking about his "custom" modline for his panasonic projector. You may want to verify the resolution and the refresh that run hdtv supports natively.

I found a solution to the problem. It worked to add the following to my xorg.conf file:

Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Disable"
EndSection

Playback is now smooth as silk using xv. I'm a happy camper.

That is interesting. You are not using composite, but when it is enabled it causes trouble? Is this specific to Ubuntu or the beta version of the driver?
(I have a 6600GT as well but I have not seen this)

To use the composite extension(for beryl och whatever) and have smooth HD maybe Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "true" in device section can solve your problem maybe....

By disabling the composite extension I was able to cleanup the playback issues that I was seeing using xv. I noticed however that xvmc still wasn't working correctly.

The problem was with my /etc/X11/XvMCConfig file. Instead of pointing to /usr/lib/libXvMCNVIDIA_dynamic.so.1 it contained
/usr/lib/libXvMC.so.1. When I changed it things improved dramatically.

I'm currently able to play back a 1080i @30Mbs MPEG2 sample clap at 55% CPU utilization using xvmc and 65% using xv. There are a few skipped frames in the first few seconds but it looks pretty good after that.

There is a side effect to disabling Composite. It won't allow me to run the LinuxMCE(Pluto) UI using alpha-blending. Apparently it requires the composite extension. If I enable "AllowGLXWithComposite" and a few other options I can run Pluto at the next highest level. I can live with the compromise as long the video playback is good.

I believe it's specific to Ubuntu. I get the same behavior with the beta driver as the 9755.
