S/PDIF on A8N-SLI nforce4 AC ’97 2.3

Hello,

I own an A8N-SLI board from Asus. The chipset is nforce4. The audio-chip is compatible to AC ’97 2.3. It also has an S/PDIF output.
I own also an old minidisk-deck (do you know that kind of device?) which has an digital coaxial input. I think this is S/PDIF.
For some reasons I am not able to get sound out of the S/PDIF jack. Do I need to install some special drivers. For now I am using snd_intel8x0 which is the recomended one on the nvidia homepage.
