Unhappy Trouble installing 100.14.09 driver under Ubuntu 7.04(Feisty)

Hi All,

I just recently got a new 8600gts, and I am having some problems getting the 100.14.09 drivers in linux. I couldn't get the bug report log, so I dont have that . But this is how I installed it, and a duplicate of the error I got when I tried to get into x.

How I installed -
1. Went to nvidia website (made sure I got 32bit driver) and downloaded package.

2. Rebooted pc, and went into recovery mode (so I could get into a terminal). and gave me warning about being in runlevel 1
3. did sh NVIDIA<tab>
4. Installed, but had to compile a kernel thing for me, which seemed weird.
5. I rebooted into x, and the error message I got is attached in a file. (i retyped it)

1 possible reason could be that I was in runlevel 1, but how do I get it to runlevel 3 anyway?
I am using kernel 2.6.20-16-generic

-Thnx in advance,
Budgetperson

exactly what posts are they covered in? I've looked at this -
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NvidiaManual
but when I exited out of X, it did not give me a command prompt. Let me look some more.

ok, I had done most of the things, but I tried entering this -

sh NVIDIA-Linux-version(except I replaced that with my driver name).run --x-module-path=`X -showDefaultModulePath 2>&1 | cut -d, -f1` --x-library-path=`X -showDefaultLibPath 2>&1`

but that did not do anything, it just gave me another prompt.

So what do I do?
Confused,
Budgetperson

EDIT - When I did it again, it gave me another error message, ill post it in 1 sec...

EDIT 2 - I think it is the same error message atcually, I cant get

sh NVIDIA-Linux-version(except I replaced that with my driver name).run --x-module-path=`X -showDefaultModulePath 2>&1 | cut -d, -f1` --x-library-path=`X -showDefaultLibPath 2>&1`

to work, can somebody help me with that?

Follow the instruction under

Debian GNU/Linux or [K]Ubuntu with Xorg 7.x

title, not all the instructions!

This has worked for me every time, as well as others but they were all 8800s. So where it says dl the 9755s, just have your 100.12.09 ready.

a.) Dl the alternate install cd
b.) Install using vga and noapci (F4 + F6)
c.) sudo apt-get install libc6-dev (ubuntu will try to get this from the CD which is ok)
d.) Verufy the following packages are installed:

- make
-gcc
-linux-headers for your kernel. Do 'uname -r' minus quotes to see your kernel version. Then do 'sudo apt-get install linux-headers-yourkernelversionhere*'
-pkg-config
-xserver-xorg-dev
e.) Sudo apt-get remove nvidia-glx --purge
f.) sudo rm /etc/init.d/nvidia-kernel
g.) sudo nano /etc/default/linux-restricted-modules-common.

Change DISABLED_MODULES="" to DISABLED_MODULES="nv" save and exit.

Dl the 9755s. http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_d..._1.0-9755.html (preferably beforehand from Windows as you won't have a GUI at this point)

save them to where you like and do
'sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop'

The last bit will be /kdm stop if you use KDE.

sudo sh NVIDIA_name_of_pkg...

Run nvidia xorg-config when it asks you, reboot and enjoy.

Just as an aside, all of this info is in the forum stickies. Read them and print them out (packages needed and so on). this way you'll have them handy during install and when operating from a command prompt.

Good Luck!

thx grey1, but whenever I do /etc/init.d/gdm stop it stops the gui, but does not get me into a command prompt, also, won't this mean I will have to reinstall ubuntu?

logout and pres ctrl+alt+F1 and that will take you to the command prompt. Type that command there.

I'm having the same problem as you except when it loads its own kernel, the xorg says the kernel doesn;t match and I have to go back into it and switch driver from "nvidia" back to "nv" to get a GUI back. so what kernel do it use?
