Default Re: 100.14.09 with 8600GT - random lockups

I have the same problem on Ubuntu 7.04 but with driver version 1.0-9755 (sic!). I didn't test 100.14.09 as I have different problem with it (described in another thread).

Strange thing is, everything worked fine until recently, so it might as well be a bug in Ubuntu itself. And I've been using this driver for months now..

Anyway, I've managed to connect to the frozen machine and got bug reports generated during freeze.

Unfortunately, I can reproduce it every time
When it freezes, X server "eats" 100% of CPU time.
If I try to kill it (through ssh) I get the following:

Default Re: 100.14.09 with 8600GT - random lockups

There's a long running thread regarding this subject on Ubuntu Forums: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=412125
and it seems that this problem is related to Ubuntu rather than to nvidia drivers.

Anyway, I've traced recent updates and found that hal packages were installed from feisty-backports. After replacing them with versions from the main repository I can't reproduce this problem anymore.

pius, could you post the list of packages you updated to resolve the issue? I'm gonna try that too.

UPDATE: I tried upgrading hal, libhal and libhal-storage to latest available from Debian "testing" source. Problem persists. Any other packages I need to upgrade too? Mine used to be the ones from main repository (or so I think), so maybe it's a red herring after all.

Ha! Here's something new (attn: netllama... hopefully)

I've upgraded the xorg and am now getting a new variation of the 'ole freeze: it unfreezes. And, I was able to generate a bug report right after one! Note the "irq16: nobody cared" in the kernel log. This is my /proc/interrupts:

CPU0 CPU1
0: 91570 0 IO-APIC-edge timer
1: 2 0 IO-APIC-edge i8042
6: 2 0 IO-APIC-edge floppy
8: 0 0 IO-APIC-edge rtc
9: 0 0 IO-APIC-fasteoi acpi
12: 4 0 IO-APIC-edge i8042
14: 3113 0 IO-APIC-edge ide0
16: 25795 0 IO-APIC-fasteoi nvidia
20: 6771 0 IO-APIC-fasteoi libata
21: 7389 0 IO-APIC-fasteoi ohci_hcd:usb2
22: 38599 0 IO-APIC-fasteoi eth0, HDA Intel
23: 13319 0 IO-APIC-fasteoi ehci_hcd:usb1, libata
NMI: 0 0
LOC: 90529 90511
ERR: 0

Now, 2 curious details:

1. System locked up for good right at the end of nvidia-bug-report :-)
2. Anytime I select GL/GLX from NVidia Settings tool, my X restarts

Default Re: 100.14.09 with 8600GT - random lockups

From a quick look at your log I saw this:

Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions//libglx.so
(II) Module glx: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
compiled for 1.3.0, module version = 1.0.0
ABI class: X.Org Server Extension, version 0.3

This is not correct, it should load the glx file from NVidia that is why X restarts when an app tries to use glx.

Check the libglx.so in /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions, it should be a symbolic link to libglx.so.100.14.09 in the same folder.

The fact that you're seeing :
"irq16: nobody cared"

suggests that this is a BIOS bug (possibly kernel, but unlikely).

Could it possibly be a matter of a BIOS setting (IRQ/PnP related)? Any ideas what I might want to try and change there?

Another bug report with irqpoll in kernel string. I am not qualified to interpret it of course but what is the deal with cd_rom interrupt right where irq 16:no one cared used to happen? ide0 is at irq 14, fwiw...

Hate to say this but after some time my machine got frozen again
So replacing hal packages brings no real solution to the problem, unfortunately.
