This is my problem:
I have an nVidia Geforce 6100 graphic card and Fedora 7. I have experienced random freezes (only my mouse worked, but everything else was locked.) but only when I were connected to internet using my Intel modem (dial up). It happened a lot in one of these situations: when compiz was enable, when I was running a 3D application and when I was browsing with Firefox (usually when there were many opened tabs or many flash animations).

Yesterday, I was so much lucky and I could kill my Xorg server before the complete freeze (everything was too slow).

The X server didn't run again, but I could get some error messages. After googling for the error messages, I found that it is related to IRQ sharing. After rebooting the system, I found that when my modem is enabled, it uses the same IRQ as nvidia. (you can check it in /proc/interrupts). And yes, it was the problem!
There are a set of solutions (as I've found):
0. disable all of unneeded pci devices in your BIOS.
1. using noapic kernel option (this worked for me. after using this, my nvidia shares the same irq with usb drivers! But it is much better, since I use my modem much more, and my usb usage is usually very little).
2. If your BIOS support it, turn PNP OS off. and use pci=biosirq kernel option
3. acpi=off kernel option
4. a combination of the above kernel options!
5. Finally, if you can, change the order of your pci devices physically. It seems that it should work most of the time!

Good luck!
So, what you think ? Should i try this on my desktop system with GeForce 6600 PCI-E+ASUS motehrboard M2N32 WS prof+athlon X2 5000+ ? Could it be a solution ? Some day ago i have sempron 3200+ + my video card + moterboard from gigabyte and even glest didn't run - only i hear beeps from my speaker and screen freezes: another mobo, another porcessor (one core), only the same nvidia binary driver and my card GF 6600. So what is going on ? In these 2 cases should i fiddle with these parameteres in grub, when booting fedora7 ? Strange for me. I have good hardware and can't play some 3D games under linux, because system hangs. Problems under Fedora7 in whole (kernel etc) or binary driver from nvidia, i don't know. I use nv and waiting for the next, maybe new kernel, new binary driver maybe new video card (ati ??)

Hi!
Please provide the contents of your /proc/interrup file to see if your problem is the same as mine.

Not by me. I tried it and got an Xid within 2 minutes. I've reverted to driver 9746, which does work reliably. (See my new thread Default Driver 100.14.19 does not fix stability problems )

irens: do you use nvidia binary drivers?!!
It seems that you don't have any IRQ reserved for nvidia driver! Sorry, I can't help you at all with your problem

Yes, you have right. I use nv driver, but when livna will be realease .19 then i i'm going to try it. When fails, post irq table again with nvidia driver enabled.

So i'm running .19 driver from NVIDIA/Livna. All seems to be okay. 3D games running very well, Fedora7 didn't crash after some hours of playing games, browsing web, using desktop apps. For my basic configuration all seems working very well. Waiting for next NVIDIA driver ...

But ! Notebook ASUS A6M-Q024H with Nvidia GO 6100 crashes still ocurss - Fedora7 crash (locks hard), when i try to run Google Erath ... So still this drivers has some bugs or kernel or ... I don't know. Things should works, rather spend time to discover, what is going bad with my system, that don't run well.

It looks like my issue (http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=99098) might be a dupe of this one...

Found a solution. I've got an HP pavilion dv2315nr, fedora 7, nvidia GeForce Go 6150, running beryl and got my computer frozen after the screensaver started, the only thing I could do was to move the cursor of the mouse, and unable to open applications, even shut down the computer. What I did was right click on the beryl icon in the system tray, select advanced beryl options, rendering platform, and choose Force Nvidia. That's it.

i am having a similar issue

i am running a core 2 duo processor on the conroe core.
2 nvidia 6600gt cards configured in a 3 monitor setup using xinerama (NOT twinview)
the cards are not COMPLETELY identical, but when i bought the second one i did some research to make sure that it was very closely based on the nvidia reference design, as was my first one.
a pci-express 3ware raid card (9650SE-8LPML)
kernel 2.6.22, gentoo

i have flashed my bios and raid card to the most recent version, as well as tried all of the fixes in the "read this post first" including setting kernel options to idle=poll, maxcpus=1, and pci=nommconf. i have also disable compositing in my X config file.

the only thing that fixed it was setting maxcpus=1, however, am obviously not willing to waste half of my brand new CPU over the long term.

the lockups occur mainly, but not exclusively when there is a lot of data being scrolled through on the console (gnome-terminal, if youre curious) the problem can be reproduced by opening a terminal and running find / and normally will cause a lockup in 5-30 seconds, rarely is it longer than that. i have run glxgears on all 3 screens and not had an issue, further, my 3d games do not cause lockups. sometimes before a complete lockup, the mouse will hang, and will normally be trapped on one monitor, and then will freeze completely; this event normally has a timeframe of less than 5 seconds.

occasionally i will receive messages in dmesg from nvrm, which are accompanied by a "mini lockup" where the mouse hangs for a few seconds, but then resumes normal operation.

another issue, possibly unrelated, and quite a bit less concerning, is that when i switch between running X sessions (ctrl-alt f7-f11) occasionally it will end one or more of the X sessions.

edit:
thinking that heavy access to my hard disk/raid card may have been the issue, i made an infinite loop in bash to output a line of text to the console. this caused the same lockup behavior.
to be clear, it does not seem to be a "proper" hard lock, as music continues to play, and hard drive access continues.
tested with xterm... same result

thank you
