Default FATAL: Error inserting nvidia (...): No such device

I am struggling installing the nvidia graphics drivers on a SUSE SLED 10.1 box. I followed the nvidia installation instructions and selected the YaST method. The system now recognizes the NV7900 card, but the system is not successful in installing the nvidia module.

I am in init level 3 trying to install the nvidia module:
# modprobe nvidia
FATAL: Error inserting nvidia (/lib/modules/2.6.16.27-0.9-smp/weak-updates/nvidia.ko): No such device

When I investigate this file I find that this file is a symbolic link to:
# ll /lib/modules/2.6.16.21-0.8-smp/updates/nvidia.ko
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 7478645 Oct 20 2006 /lib/modules/2.6.16.21-0.8-smp/updates/nvidia.ko

so the file exists but maybe there is a mismatch between the device described in this file and the actual device found?

Any one that can shed light on this and educate me how to resolve this problem?

You have several of these messages in your log file:
Quote:

Jun 17 10:24:32 arch-ws-14 kernel: NVRM: This can occur when a driver such as rivafb, nvidiafb or
Jun 17 10:24:32 arch-ws-14 kernel: NVRM: rivatv was loaded and obtained ownership of the NVIDIA
Jun 17 10:24:32 arch-ws-14 kernel: NVRM: device(s).
Jun 17 10:24:32 arch-ws-14 kernel: NVRM: Try unloading the rivafb, nvidiafb or rivatv kernel module
Jun 17 10:24:32 arch-ws-14 kernel: NVRM: (and/or reconfigure your kernel without rivafb/nvidiafb
Jun 17 10:24:32 arch-ws-14 kernel: NVRM: support), then try loading the NVIDIA kernel module again.
Jun 17 10:24:32 arch-ws-14 kernel: NVRM: No NVIDIA graphics adapter probed!
Make sure that your kernel was built without rivafb, nvidiafb, and rivatv and that those modules are not loaded.

Does the problem persist if you boot with video=vesa:off vga=normal?

I need help with all of those suggestions.

For starters, how do I find out if my 'kernel' has been compiled with something? I did an lsmod but there does not seem to be any fb, riva, or nvidia gfx related modules loaded.

When I fire up yast2 x11 it 'recognizes' the GeForce 7900 GS but the options don't make any sense to me. I see fbdev which could be something but I can't find any info on what this is or what values it would take.

So I have no clue how to proceed from here....

Zander:

My apologies: lsmod shows nvidiafb to be loaded. I was careless in the search but lsmod | grep nvidia yielded confirmation.

I unloaded the nvidiafb module and tried to install "nvidia" but that yielded the same error message. I did this at initlevel 5 though, if that is a problem, let me know (and educate me why).

unloaded nvidiafb but still the same error when trying to install "nvidia" module.

I have included a nvidia-bug log file when booting with your suggested command lines. NVRM messages are the same....

So how does one reconfigure one's kernel so that it doesn't use something that seems to cause this installation process to fail?

I had the same error in openSUSE 10.1 and I have this error in openSUSE 10.2. But when I compile module myself it works great (every driver from 9XXX series and new 100.X series) so IMHO only rpm's from NVidia site are bad quality.

That would narrow the problem down a bit.

Zander: can you comment on this observation?

The NVIDIA driver RPMs that are hosted on NVIDIA servers are built by Novell/SUSE. Any issues with them should be reported to Novell/SUSE.

I can't comment on this off-hand, but we'll follow up on this. Thanks for the heads-up.
