Try these and as was asked before - have you defragged lately?
I'll second this.

For the longest time now I've been getting nothing but BSODs left and right (Vista Ultimate x64). Initially I wanted to just blame Vista, but I started investigating the problem further and it appears that it might be a couple different factors.

The hard drive I was using cause me problems in XP as well (BSODing also). I hoped that just upgrading to Vista might fix it atleast long enough to allow me to get a new hard drive. Well, it did. It worked extremely well as a matter of fact, untill just recently. Now the hard drive isn't even detected. So, I'm re-installing XP on a new 80GB drive and then I'll install Vista (Ultimate 32-bit) on my second hard drive.

Furthermore, I've ran Memtest several times, and each time it fails at test 8, and comes up with nearly an infinite amount of errors during test 7 (first pass as well). So that is a good indication that my RAM is probably going. This has me stumped as not even a month ago I ran Memtest and my RAM went through like 11 passes without any errors. So I'm just hoping that maybe something else is causing my RAM to act up. I really don't want to replace it.

If need be, I have another 2GB of Patriot DDR500 I can use.

So, the moral of the story- don't just blame the OS. Even though you are "certain" your hardware is not to blame, never rule out failing hardware. Do as Grey has advised, see if that solves the problem. If not, start going through your setup component at a time to see if anything might be giving up.

if you have old version of SPTD driver installed (aka Deamon Tools or Alcohol)

this could be causing the problem. Update to the latest 1.49 version of SPTD to see if it fixes the issue.

Could be. In fact, because of poorly performing and freezing SPTD I purchased Virtual CD 9 a week ago, with their own low-level x64 driver. Works great, emulates without any problem 10+ DVDs, and I got rid off SPTD (finally).

I dont have alchol etc installed on the HDD

A little sign keeps popping up after it goes slow saying windows indexing service stopped working....

I got to windows indexing and it is greyed out saying its disabled...

How can I stop it.

If I want to create a new folder. 30sec pause once I have typed name in. Paste something to it and it will freeze for ages and will finally do no matter how small the file (from 1kb to 2gb). A popup saying "window indexing etc" comes up.

Any ideas?

Do you have write caching enabled? Or advanced performance. One of the 2 may not agree with your hdds. Just guessing here...

Like i said, did you check if you have disk errors in the windows event log?

Anyways, you can disable the indexing service from the services applet (Administrative Tools>Services). Locate the Windows Search service and set it to manual startup.
or
Control Panel>Indexing options>Modify> remove check marks from all selected locations.

As Redeemed said, it could always be some sort of hardware issue. The last time I installed Windows I had all sorts of problems that I was blaming on a bad install; turned out my hard drive was on its last legs.

I second checking the event log, that might give some direction to what's causing the problem.

My brother's Vista machine has insane slowdown on boot caused by Symantec running a liveupdate in the background, are you running any firewall/virus scanner programs that may be trying to work intensively in the background?

Regarding the number of processes running. It's not the quantity of processes, but the quality that makes all the difference. My machine is running 60 processes right now and it's never run better, no slowdown. But if I had one bad process in there the whole thing can go to crap.

haha, speaking of AV, one of my "genius" friends was complaining his PC was slow, and asked for help.

He had 5 different AV installed. He had norton, symantec, mcafee, avast and antivir, all running at the same time!!.

I have one AV installed, thats OFF 99% of the time. Only when I downloading something that looks weird, i check the file.
