Oh yeah, Microsoft also is offering Vista Support training courses for us IT folk here at the University...for a measly $800/person for a 3-day course...

For me it certainly is, although I'm using 2gb ram with a 4gb readyboost cache (pain in the ass when it causes thrashing but provides a nice slight reduction in load times)

I'm not using readyboost, and my response times are as fast or faster than XP.

Funny thing too, I disabled aero and other nicities for a week or so, just to see if I could notice a difference and there was none, so full eye candy for me.

My only gripe really is lack of support with products like zonealarm. All else is very sweet - which for some reason, reading through the thread, seems to irritate the piss out of some. lol, whatever..

Vista x64 boots up a couple of seconds faster than my XP x86 install. However, I do have tons of software and antivirus/firewall solutions installed on XP.

I don't use Vista very often, although all those cool features that Evilghost mentioned are making me rethink..

BTW, grey_1, I believe ZoneAlarm Free has been released for Windows Vista if you are interested.

I have installed vista on a few older computers, and for tasks like using email and surfing the web, it actually performs better than XP due to the fact that basically all of the shell related rasterizing functions are offloaded from the CPU to the GPU.

If you want to write a rootkit or keylogger, you must code this as a device driver, not a simple EXE you put in StartUp folder. However, as Vista x64 will not install / use 32-bit device drivers at all, these (old) rootkits will simply not work. Also, if you have UAC on, you cannot install any device without explicit admin approval. Also (by default, you can change this) all device drivers and vxd modules must be properly signed, which rootkits are not.

Of course this will change, we will see some x64 rootkits. But they never will be properly signed and never will install if UAC is on anyway. Vista x64 *is* very secure..

I think commenting on speed is a little pointless especially if you are running 64bit. There is literally nothing but just games installed on your Windows. When I install XP it's faster than hell, when it's got a bunch of applications installed it's speed decreases. I sincerely doubt Vista 64 can even be measured applicably.

Also, I have no problems ALT-Tabbing nor have I ever had performance issues ALT-Tabbing. To me, you obviously have a configuration problem with your Windows. When I press ALT-Tab it's instantaneous.

@Vista 64bit vs 32bit Spyware etc.. That doesn't absolve you at all from getting spyware. Spyware comes in all forms, tracking cookies included.

Does Vista block ping by default? I don't think so. Secure is more how you look at it, imo.

Yes, it does. Firewall in Vista is very good, in fact, better than competition, because it works also when computer boots. It allows to filter inbound and outbound communication, per application, per hours specified, per user groups, etc.
