Default In-game advertising in Quake Wars...

http://community.enemyterritory.com/index.php?q=node/58

For those that don't know. For me I really couldn't care less, but lots do for some reason. As long as I don't see a Viagra ad I'm ok. If they have Bikini advertisements, I'm totally behind it! If it lags the game to hell. I will hate them! If they try and steal info from my PC, I'm gonna hate em!

What does tick me off is the following statement. Total BS imo.

Quote:
To help cover this level of on-going support without passing the costs on to the gamer, ETQW will feature appropriate advertisements in select locations of our levels.
Whatever

Why doesn't id Software just get a publisher, and so maybe they can have money that way. If you're PAYING for something, you should have to have ADS. ADS is what gets you FREE stuff.

You guys are so right. I pay good money for my cable TV service and they STILL send me advertising commercials! When will the madness end! Before you know it, they will be putting advertisements on race cars that can only turn left!

Normally I am ok with this, but honostly, I really cannot see how it would fit into this game? On a Strogg universe??

Same thoughts here... To me it fits in with say... Test Drive Unlimited... but with this kind of game I don't think it fits at all.

For the record. If I were in charge of Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, I would make all the players wear uniforms that look like this.

Even the Strogg

Some games in-game ads work for. I don't mind if billboards in Need for Speed have real ads versus ads for fake products. It makes it seem a little more realistic IMHO.

BUT, when the ads shown in the games are the same too many times (ie EVERY billboard advertises the same product), or when the people track whether you look at the ads, from what angles, and for how long (ie SWAT 4) they're crossed a line. When I'm watching TV they don't have a camera looking back at me to see whether or not I laugh at a commercial.

This is about much more than in game ads. Think about it for a minute. This IS about tracking your actions.

If they merely wanted to create income through in game ads, all they had to of done is sign direct contracts with the producers of specific products and place static ads in the game prior to release. For christ's sake, it's Quake Wars: Enemy Territory, the most anticipated game of 2007. Image how much Intel wants an ad included, imagine the bidding war that would transpire between coke and pepsi. They wouldn't even need a middle man to create the deal.

But that's not what they did. They included a system which places active advertising in the game, advertising which tracks which ad you are viewing, the angle you viewed it from, and how long you viewed it. All completely unneccesary to accomplish the objective. They didnt need dynamic ads at all.

What is really happening is they realize that most pc gamers watch less and less TV, go to movies less frequently, etc. In other words pc gamers tune out the outside world, particularly when gaming. That drives the advertising execs mad so they had to find a way to stick it in our faces.

Why does it have to be actively served ads that monitor if I view them, when, and how. Why does it have to use my cpu cycles, my bandwidth? Don't we already have enough performance problems, random crashes, and bugs in the PC world? Do we need to add more code, code that doesn't serve to enhance user experience in any way?

Dirt looks awesome, but it's starforce infected. Now I guess I'll have to skip QW just like I did 2142. Only diff is, I really want dirt and QW so I have to spite myself.

If they had just placed a few random static product names/images in a creative manner before release they wouldn't even have had to tell anyone they did it, and many people wouldn't even notice. They would have had their income. Instead they included spyware which actively monitors your viewing habits and uses your resources to do it.

The game takes place on Earth for one thing.

I suppose you are right, but it is still supposed to take place far in the future, modern day Pepsi ads just wouldn't make sense.

Maybe they can make it work, I don't know, but it doesn't seem like it would work too well.

People complained the same when BF2142 came out because they thought it would ruin the immersion factor, it didn't. Even though you didn't expect the Core 2 Duo sales to be doing very well in the year 2142, it doesn't look that out of place because the ad was minimalistic in nature.

Well the demo is located in Japan. For the Earth Maps why not ?

If they are on the Strogg maps it wouldn't make any sense.
