DX performance sub par? Try non-existent. A Win32 closed-source proprietary rendering engine isn't going to work on Linux unless it's emulated ala Cedega/WineX-CVS/etc.

Do you have any of that good 'ol boy meowmix?
Correct, Ultimate x64.

But you'll be glad to hear this Ghost- the rig in my sig has been KIA.

Oh- but not cause of Windows. The blame would be that crappy ASSus mobo. Even my Ubuntu and Kubuntu LiveCDs fail to load. RMA? Probably... again.

Don't get me wrong Ghost, I love Kubuntu (I'm not terribly fond of vanilla Ubuntu honestly)- it's just not what I need from an OS. This is referring to that whole "personal-preference" thing. I'm a gamer, Linux is not the gamer's OS. Why? It's lack of support for DX. And as you've covered already, that lack of support will more than likely never change. Oh well.

You just keep telling yourself that. I'm sure A12ctic does the same.

Oh I know, I just love to harass you guys. Linux isn't a gaming OS, this isn't deficiency of Linux but rather that the gaming publishers, through collusion with Microsoft, release their games using a closed-source rendering engine which Microsoft users to strong-arm it's users to upgrade (DX10).

I still love you Windows guys.

You can bet that if more developers started using OpenGL, and that became the predominate API, I'd probably become an avid linux user just cause of that. But for now, Vista is literally everything I need from an OS. I could not think of anyway I'd like the OS to be different, nor anything that could make the OS itself better. My complaints lie with the drivers- but that is an nVidia issue, not an MS issue.

As soon as I get a second rig up and running, I want to dual boot Vista and Kubuntu. I'm hoping for a 64-bit version of Kubuntu, and I want to get my 8800s running in SLi in Kubuntu as well. Then I'd just like to start tweaking with the OS and experimenting- I'd imagine that would be a blast.

Some day, hopefully soon.

As much as you point out the deficiencies of game developers, it's still unlikely to ever change. It's just the way things are. I guess you just have to look at the history of Directx and OpenGL to see how things got to be where they are today. Microsoft managed to gain dominance in gaming without even intending it at first.

But anyway, this has to be the best Vista goofup ever

I made the full Linux switch in the summer of 2005, about that time I registered. Prior to that I ran Windows XP, prior to that Windows 2000, prior to that Win98SE, prior to that Win98, prior to that Win95C, prior to that Win95 loaded from 1.36Mb DFM floppy, prior that Win 3.11 with MS-DOS 6.0, prior to that MS-DOS 5.0.

I've always ran a Linux server, Ubuntu 6.06 LTS, prior to that RH 7.3 bastardized from RH6.2 from the E-Smith/Mitel distribution, prior to that RH 5.0 on 2.0.33 back when I used to run an ISA 3c509 and did custom slim kernel images. All I can say is "ipfwadm"
