Exclamation Cannot switch to another session with 100.14.11.

Description: I install 100.14.11, reboot, log into KDE, start a new session. Then I go back to the first session (by pressin Ctrl+Alt+F7) and then try to get to the second one by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F8. Screen becomes black and the only solution is the RESET button.

With 1.0-9755, I can switch between the sessions to and fro without problems.

If by "another session" you mean running more than one X server simultaneously, that isn't supported. Only one X server per GPU is supported.

But it was supported in 1.0-9755, right?

There is more than one user working on the computer...

No, this was never a supported configuration. I'm afraid that if it worked in the past, you were lucky.

If you need to run multiple X servers, you'll need multiple GPUs.

And is there any chance it will be supported in the future?

There aren't any current plans to support this configuration.

Hi,

the described problem does not only happen, when one switches between different seperately running sessions. It is exactly the same if one logs completely out of one KDE session into KDM. One does not even get into KDM anymore. The current KDE session freezes and Reset-button is the only option. This has not been a problem before 100.14.11 and therefore I have downgraded again.

best regards

Werner

nonsense. i never had probs with that feature in the past.
so if now comes to trouble, then nvidia changed the driver, period.

working like a charm on opensue with the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.09 driver and with ca. 50 or some of the previous drivers.

i've at the moment running kde, gnome and xfce with different users logged in on 3 different instances of X. Of course the second and third instance of X must be started out of the first one. in my case out of kde.

so much for being lucky.

i got no problem with buying another nvidia card (i'll definetelly buy two of them together with a new pcie mobo, all for XEN), but with your statement i get the feeling you wanna fool your paying customers. sorry being offending, but that says my guts.

thx

Yea it's complete nonsense. I've been starting multiple X servers on any card and with any driver I've ever used during the past 8 years, for example to run full screen gaming sessions on a dedicated X server. If this doesn't work any more it's clearly a bug. And even if it is another feature nvidia intentionally canceled (like overlays, dga, ...) it's still a bug and should be viewed as such.

There may have been a misunderstanding. You can still run more than one X server on a given GPU and switch between them, but access to the GPU is limited to one such X server at a time; i.e. only one of the X servers can be VT-switched in (in that sense, no two X servers can "run" concurrently). If this no longer works, it is most likely due to a driver bug. Also, even if it weren't supported, the fact that it appears to hang choroba's system would still be considered a bug if the driver were responsible.

All that said, I'm not aware of problems with VT-switching between X servers; if you experience problems, please provide as much information as possible along with the nvidia-bug-report.log file (i.e. are you switching between bare X servers or do you have 3D applications running on either or both of them, etc.).

I have added the bug report in the first post. No 3D applications running, in one X server I run a KDE session (with konsole), in the second one there is only the kdm (login screen).
