Default 100.14.11 driver hangs the Ubuntu box

modprobe nvidia
does not produce errors. However if X started the box hangs (remote terminal session reports host disappeared)

./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.11-pkg1.run --sanity
reports OK

The nvidia-bug-report.log is attached.

Any ideas where to look for a problem? what to start from, etc?

Thanks in advance.

According to the output that you've posted, you have no X log nor an X configuration on this system. I don't see how X could work, or be working with any X driver under those circumstances.

Well, I actually have. In the first post I given the last lines from X log.old The the box dies and I have to hard-reset it. As far as I understand X log renamed into log.old. But you right that I removed X server from start up as otherwise I could not do anything at all with the box. Should I check for anything else? And by the way gdm is working OK with open-source drivers.
