Default AMD price cuts, tomorow:

http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=7960

Not bad, for an upgrade or even a new PC.

Not bad? I dont think you realised how bad it will look like after 22 July. I think AMD new price cut is sucide.

After 22 July, $169 Athlon 64 X2 6000+ will compete with cheaper E6700 around $173 or possible price match at $169. So majority of people will go for E6700 becuase it faster and low power than Athlon 64 X2 6000+.

So the X2 6000+ is their flagship processor and it will be only $169?

That's suicide on their part.

This must be hurting their profit margins big time.

Honestly i dont care about their margins. I have an X2 3800 and this is a great opportunity to upgrade.
For those o want to buy a new rig then the Intel/AMD choice is there to make.
I hope AMD gets trough this hard times, but like i said im a consumer and this prices for me are great news.

I said it last time they dropped prices, and I'll say it again:

They would be selling more chips if they hadnt dropped the socket 939 and 754 platforms.

Most people don't have an "old" Socket AM2 CPU. Athlons have barely progressed at all since the AM2 platform started so unless you bought a bottom of the barrel sempron, there isn't any reason to upgrade. On the other hand, people running older platforms with lower end single cores would love to get 3Ghz dual cores for under $169.

Hell, I would consider it myself because they are so damned cheap.

I guess phasing out everything but AM2 is the only way they are going to move on though. Having 3 platforms for the same CPU was just a big mistake on their part.

yep, i would've done it if it was S939. it is sad to see AMD going down like this, and their future doesnt look to bright either.

QFT. If they had 939 for these newer chips I would consider it but there all AM2.

I know heaps of people who'd love some more 939 CPUs too.

I would have too, if I hadn't taken the Intel road not long ago. I love my 3800+. Never had one issue with it or the board it was running on.

I agree CaptNKILL. I would have kept my Lanparty 939 board and just got the 6000+ to tide me over for another year. I wish they kept the 939 socket alive especially as these AM2 cpu's are barely faster with DDR2 memory.

Word....if they hadn't done it I would not moved on to my new Core2Duo rig but, would have just purchased a 6000+ when pricing made sense.

It's been said here, but I'll say it again....they screwed themselves with the AM2. Tons of 939's out there, all the 939 owners that wanted to upgrade just left for Intel, like I will be doing when I'm ready. If they put in a upgrade path for 939 folks, we'd have stuck around a little longer.

The majority of people just went from 939 to C2D and skipped AM2. I don't even know of anyone with a AM2.

By abandoning the 939 they shot themselves in the foot.
