The majority of people just went from 939 to C2D and skipped AM2. I don't even know of anyone with a AM2.

By abandoning the 939 they shot themselves in the foot.
I agree

Yup. They should have stuck with s939. When I upgraded, I went to a Core2Quad and turned my old s939 into a HTPC. Problem is I want to upgrade it to a dual core.....but s939 is dead. So I'm either going to have to find a used s939 or do an upgrade to AM2. And I'm not going to AM2. If anything I'd switch it out to a C2D system.

AM2 was just released at the wrong time. I could understand them releasing AM2 with the Phenom series- that just makes sense. But so far they have not released a single processor for AM2 that could not be made for 939. This is one reason I'm getting a Q6600 later this month. I still love AMD, and I'm rooting for them- but I don't think I'll buy another one of thier procs till the Phenom line has had time to mature a bit.

IŽll do the same, if they had stickied with S939 IŽll upgrade to a 6000+ for the next year or so, in christmas IŽll go for quad core intels unless AMD releases something better.

I would have upgraded my 4400 by now but I have no 939 upgrade path. C2D will get the next nod unless AMD shows me something compelling soon. I stopped using Intel when Athalon 64 came out and ended up with a useless 754 board and now the same with 939. I guess it looks like it's back to Intel for me.

Upgraded my PC last month. Used to have a socket 939 4800X2. I watched in horror as the new 5000-6000+ came out on am2. Knowing I needed a new mobo, ram and cpu to upgrade I just went for a Q6600. My only move to Intel in >7 years.

But as already mentioned, AMD did this to themselves. There really is no need for AM2. They could have just stuck with 939 for another year and gone straight to AM3 when it was ready. I remember reading when AM2 came out that AMD felt it was necessary so that people didn't get confused with their 939 socket. Sounded like an excuse to force people to give them more cash, but all its ended up doing is forcing all their customers to Intel.

I still rock the 939skt in my Gaming/Linux rig and it still runs fine. I am going to upgrade to dual-core X2 3800 or 4400 here soon for when Crysis comes along. But besides gaming, Linux is blinding fast on my rig already so I have no complaints there! Come on AMD!! Drop those prices!!!

Also agree my wife has a S939 and it would have been a nice time to upgrade her older X2 4000 if they still produced these higher clocked CPU's as s939.
