Default xf86cfg

I'd like to be able to tweak the default configuration that xorg is using, but I can't seem to get xf86cfg or any of the other utilities recommended by kdmconfig to output an automatically generated configuration file. When xf86cfg starts up (it properly selects the nvidia driver), I'm presented with an empty X screen - there is no configuration utility.

Any suggestions?
