Default Vsync in 2D?

Is it possible to get vsync screen updates in 2d graphics mode? I get 3D style "tearing" when moving windows using Ubuntu 7.04 (regardless of kernel or driver version). Normally, I don't notice it but, when moving a window (specifically horizontally), on my laptop LCD, you can essentially see the redraws around the border of the windows (much like you would running compiz with vsync off). It's not ghosting due to low LCD response times (I see that too) and I can't believe it's the fault of X because the machine is quite powerful (Core Duo with 7900GS GO).

How can I make 2d window movements "smooth"?
