Ok, I'm planning to get a ps3 shortly. I had read (can't remember where) that a new version of the firmware will force software emulation no matter which version you have. Does anyone one know if this is true? If it is not true, I will try to aquire the ps3 with the emotion hardware. If it is true, I couldn't care less which ps3 I end up getting.

Sony gained too much positive feedback from the price drop and pulling such a retarded move would be just well retarded.

Remember, the SCEE guys have said some really stupid things in the past that never ended up being true.
My god it just never ends....

I'm a bit confused by this. Why is this underhanded? Who is getting screwed by this?

As I see it:
You either can get a 60 gig PS3 for 500 bucks now (with 5 Blu-ray disk of questionable quality) or wait for the 80 gig with Motostorm for 600. The only people I can see being left out in the cold are those that don't have the money on hand to buy the 60 gig now and won't want to spend 100 dollars more for the game and 20 more gigs. That to me is unfortunate, but not underhanded. Help me understand.

I own a 360 and not a PS3 so I want to know why I should call Sony stupid and shady.

The reason that people are calling Sony shady is that the price drop is only temporary and to clear stock. Once the stock of the older, arguably better, units are cleared the price jumps back up to the older and higher price. When people want a price drop they generally want it to stick and not to bounce.

I'm also a 360 owner and do not own a ps3 but I can tell you with complete certainty that should I ever need/want a blueray player I'll be getting a PS3.

That's the thing. Sony did not state what their plans were after the depletion of the 60gb's stock. It's going to be a few months before they sell all of those PS3s too.

I don't see them doing this without selling a 80gb version with no game... would be rather stupid to force you into a bundle.

I think there will be a bit of a rush for the cheaper units while they last. The store stock shouldn't last too long as it is the cheapest blueray player on the market and you get five free movies.

The only clear reason why Sony is doing this in this way is to make a clear break between the units with hardware BC and those without. Personally I don't think Sony is being shady or underhanded in this decision, possibly unclear and still a bit stupid as the wii shows us: cheap sells.

Or maybe they wanted to confuse people so some people would rush out to buy it thinking it won't last long :\.

Seriously I can't even cover for this move... its ****ing stupid. Im sure they will just give another "price cut" when the 60gb run out by just removing motorstorm from the pack and selling the 80gb for $499.
