Talking GLX broken, FBSD 6.2, xorg 7.2, nvidia 100.14.11

I've been trying on and off for days to get the GL support in the nvidia driver to work. No matter what I do I always get this:

.
.
.
(II) LoadModule: "glx"
(II) Loading /usr/local/lib/xorg/modules/extensions//libglx.so
dlopen: /usr/local/lib/xorg/modules/extensions//libglx.so: Undefined symbol "_nv
001452gl"
(EE) Failed to load /usr/local/lib/xorg/modules/extensions//libglx.so
(II) UnloadModule: "glx"
(EE) Failed to load module "glx" (loader failed, 7)
.
.
.

I've rebuilt the nvidia driver from ports a number of times under various conditions, including doing:

# pkg_deinstall -a
# mv /usr/ports /usr/ports.old
(fresh csup)
# rm -rf /usr/local/lib/*
# rm /var/db/pkg/*
# cd /usr/ports && make index
# cd /usr/ports/x11/xorg && make install

xdriinfo fails here and I have to go into graphics/libGL and do make install and then continue the xorg install. If I try to install nvidia-driver to satisfy the GL requirement of xdriinfo, xdriinfo complains:

checking for library containing glXGetProcAddressARB... no
configure: error: cannot find GL library - make sure Mesa or other OpenGL package is installed
See `config.log' for more details.
===> Script "configure" failed unexpectedly.
Please report the problem to x11@FreeBSD.org [maintainer] and attach the
"/usr/ports/x11/xdriinfo/work/xdriinfo-1.0.1/config.log" including the output
of the failure of your make command. Also, it might be a good idea to provide
an overview of all packages installed on your system (e.g. an `ls
/var/db/pkg`).

And xorg installation won't continue.

So, settling on libGL for now I continue:

# cd /usr/ports/x11/xorg && make install

(fresh xorg.conf creation using xorgconfig)

# cd /usr/ports/x11/nvidia-driver && make install
# startx

(famous error)

Suspecting that libGL broke something:

# cd /usr/ports/graphics/libGL && make deinstall
# cd /usr/ports/x11/nvidia-driver && make deinstall clean reinstall
# startx

(famous error)

I've also downloaded the latest nvidia driver, 100.14.11 and tried to use it (that is, build and install directly from source rather than using the port), but again, I get the same error.

Help?

- Matt

i thing that u should not install x11/nvidia-driver and graphics/libGL
if they are installed uninstall them!

download nvidia 100.14.11 unpack and install them (there is a topic with instructions how to fix some make files if u are using xorg 7.2)

after install use nvidia-xconfig (it make corrent xorg.conf for nvidia driver)

for me that worked and i have fully operational quake3 and ut2004demo (i thing both of them uses opengl)

Thanks, but that is my current setup: The last thing I tried was to uninstall graphics/libGL and x11/nvidia-driver, and build and install the latest driver directly from nvidia. No go.

I suppose I could try rebuilding xorg with neither the graphics/libGL, nor the x11/nvidia-driver port. The problem I've had with that is that when the xorg build gets to the x11/xdriinfo port it dies, looking for libGL (or equivalent). Perhaps if I install the latest non-port nvidia driver at that point xdriinfo will continue.

Sure would be nice if someone could tell me whether or not that's worth the effort. I'd hate to have to rebuild xorg yet AGAIN.

Surely SOMEONE knows what those missing symbols are and what library they are supposed to get linked in from.... Clearly libglx is missing some symbols that were available during build... where did they go??

The unresolved symbol error suggests that you have mismatched driver components installed (i.e. libGL.so.1, libGLcore.so.1 and libglx.so don't have the same version).

Hmm... mismatched versions -- that's something I didn't think of. I _did_ have a working nvidia driver installed before I upgraded xorg from 6.9 to 7.2. I've uninstalled and reinstalled (both xorg and the nvidia driver) a number of times... although come to think of it, I've been presuming that the package/port tools are doing the job right. Maybe I'll try:

# find / -name 'libGL*' -exec rm {} \; -or -name 'libglx*' -exec rm {} \;

and then reinstall the driver.... I'll try that in a few and let everyone know what happens.

Thanks.

One thing to note is that the Makefile in the official 100.14.11 .tar.gz package is unaware of the modular Xorg installation paths, which may be part of the problem. There are a few threads on this on this forum. Future driver versions should handle Xorg 7.x ports/ installations correctly.

Talking Re: GLX broken, FBSD 6.2, xorg 7.2, nvidia 100.14.11

That did it: something had installed libGL* into /usr/local/lib, AND /lib ! I removed those by hand and then reinstalled the x11/nvidia-driver port and it works fine now. I was also able to rebuild x11/xdriinfo after the nvidia driver installed (although it doesn't work, saying "libGL is too old" when I try to run it).

This might be a lesson worth noting for anyone on FreeBSD 6, doing a fresh install of xorg 7.2 and related ports after an uninstall of xorg 6.9 (which I chose to do after the upgrade procedure for xorg described in /usr/ports/UPDATING proved too tedious due to the large number of ports I had installed). Make sure after you uninstall everything that libGL and friends are completely removed!

@Zander: Correct handling for Xorg 7.x ports would be great! I'm working with 100.14.11 (corrected X11-BASE per hand) for GeForce 7600 GS on FreeBSD 7.0-CURRENT from today and all seems to be ok. No more crashes or freezes :-)

Is there any chance to get a version of legacy drivers (for me 9631) running on FreeBSD 7.0-CURRENT again? Actual legacy drivers freeze on CURRENT, as described in other threads before. So at this moment there is no chance to get 3D acceleration with older GeForce cards like 6200 :-(

Thanks, Rainer

@rhurlin: I'll try to reproduce the problem with the current legacy graphics drivers. Please note, however, that the latest legacy graphics drivers are 1.0-7185 and 1.0-9639, respectively, 1.0-9631 is no longer supported. Also, GeForce 6200 GPUs are fully supported by 100.14.11, see http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree8...ppendix-a.html.

@zander: Thank you for your reply. Indeed you are right. 1.0-9639 is the actual one, sorry.

I tried non-legacy drivers before 100.14.11 with my GeForce 6200 at the office and they did not work. This card is a TurboCache(TM). Could that be the reason?

I am out of office for some days. In the mid of next week I will try 100.14.11 on GeForce 6200 TurboCache and write about it.

@rhurlin: without more information on the nature of the problem(s) you were seeing with older non-legacy drivers and your GeForce 6200, I really can't say what the root cause might have been. 100.14.11 is expected to work with this GPU.

OK,
Can anyone please confirm whether this release is compatible with Xorg7.2 on a FreeBSD 6-Stable.

After upgrading to Xorg7.2 from the port and NVidia driver, it's just NVidia Splash and boom, fatal error.
